Tips for success
For the flakiest results, keep the puff pastry as cold as possible before baking. If the pastry warms up and becomes sticky, chill it in the refrigerator for 10 minutes before cutting.
Use a sharp pizza wheel or knife to cut clean strips, which makes folding easier and prevents tearing. When folding, don't stretch the strips; let them overlap naturally to create a uniform braid.
To ensure even baking, rotate the baking sheet halfway through the cooking time. If the pastry browns too quickly, tent it loosely with foil. Let the pastries cool for at least 5 minutes before serving, so the chocolate doesn't run out when you cut them.
Dust with powdered sugar just before serving to keep it from melting into the pastry. These are best enjoyed warm, but they're also delicious at room temperature.
Variations
- Almond Chocolate: Add a handful of sliced almonds on top of the chocolate spread before braiding. The nuts toast during baking and add a delightful crunch that complements the creamy chocolate.
- Berry Swirl: Spoon a few tablespoons of raspberry or strawberry jam over the chocolate spread before braiding. The tart fruit cuts through the sweetness and adds a vibrant color.
- Cinnamon Sugar: Mix a teaspoon of cinnamon with the chocolate spread, and sprinkle the finished pastries with a cinnamon-sugar blend instead of powdered sugar for a warm, spicy twist.
- Salted Caramel: Drizzle a little salted caramel sauce over the chocolate spread before braiding. The salt enhances the chocolate flavor and adds a gooey, decadent layer.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven for best texture.
- Freezer
- Unbaked braided pastries can be frozen for up to 1 month. Bake from frozen, adding 5 minutes to the baking time.
- Reheat
- Reheat baked pastries in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 5-7 minutes until warm and crisp.
Store leftover pastries in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. To reheat, place them in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 5 minutes to restore crispness. Avoid microwaving, as it will make the pastry soggy.
You can assemble the braided pastry up to 4 hours ahead and keep it in the refrigerator, covered, until ready to bake. If baking from cold, add a couple of minutes to the baking time. The baked pastries can also be made a day ahead and reheated in the oven.
Serving ideas
Serve the braided pastries warm, straight from the oven, when the chocolate is still molten and the pastry is shatteringly crisp.
They make a stunning centerpiece for brunch, alongside fresh fruit and coffee. For dessert, pair them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of extra chocolate sauce.
These pastries are also wonderful at room temperature, making them perfect for picnics or lunchboxes. The flaky layers remain crisp for a few hours, and the chocolate sets into a fudgy filling.
Cut them into slices to share, or let everyone pull apart their own piece. They're sure to impress with their bakery-style appearance and rich, nutty flavor.

5-Minute Braided Puff Pastry Chocolate Pastries

Ingredients
- 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed)
- 1/2 cup chocolate hazelnut spread
- 1 tbsp powdered sugar, for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. On a lightly floured surface, gently roll the thawed puff pastry sheet to smooth out any creases, keeping it about 1/8-inch thick.
- Spread the chocolate hazelnut spread evenly down the center of the pastry in a strip about 2 inches wide, leaving a 1-inch border at the top and bottom.
- Using a pizza wheel or sharp knife, cut diagonal strips along both sides of the pastry, from the edge toward the chocolate filling, about 1 inch apart. Make sure the strips are even for a neat braid.
- Starting at one end, fold the top strip over the chocolate at a slight angle, then alternate with the opposite strip, overlapping them to create a braid. Continue until all strips are folded, tucking the ends underneath.
- Transfer the braided pastry to the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 18 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown all over, with visible flaky layers.
- Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes on the baking sheet. Dust generously with powdered sugar, then slice and serve warm so the chocolate is still melted.
