Tips for success

For the best melt, heat the milk to 170°F (77°C) and pour it directly over the center of the sphere. Stir gently to help the chocolate melt evenly. If you prefer a stronger chocolate flavor, use a dark hot cocoa mix or add a pinch of sea salt to the milk.

If the chocolate shells are too thick, they may not melt completely in the milk. Aim for a thin, even coating.

If the shells are too thin, they may crack when filled. Practice makes perfect, so don't be discouraged if the first few aren't perfect.

Variations

  • Peppermint Hot Chocolate Bombs: Add 1/4 teaspoon of peppermint extract to the hot cocoa mix before filling the spheres. Top the finished bombs with crushed candy canes along with the white chocolate drizzle.
  • Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate Bombs: Drizzle caramel sauce over the filled chocolate sphere before sealing. Add a pinch of sea salt to the hot cocoa mix for a sweet-salty flavor.
  • Spiced Hot Chocolate Bombs: Mix 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg into the hot cocoa mix. Dust the finished bombs with cinnamon before serving.
  • Orange Hot Chocolate Bombs: Add 1 teaspoon of orange zest to the melted dark chocolate before brushing the molds. The orange flavor pairs beautifully with the dark chocolate and marshmallows.

Storage and make-ahead

Fridge
Store the finished hot chocolate bombs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 month. Bring to room temperature before serving.
Freezer
Freeze the chocolate spheres in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before serving.
Reheat
To reheat the milk, gently warm it in a saucepan until it reaches 170°F (77°C). Do not boil.

Store the finished hot chocolate bombs in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 2 weeks. Keep them away from heat and sunlight to prevent melting.

They can also be stored in the refrigerator for up to a month, but bring them to room temperature before serving to avoid condensation.

You can make the chocolate spheres up to 1 week in advance and store them in an airtight container. Fill them with the cocoa mix and marshmallows just before serving, or store them filled if you prefer. When ready to serve, simply heat the milk and pour.

Serving ideas

Serve the hot chocolate bombs in clear glass mugs so you can see the dramatic melt and the marshmallows rising.

Pour the hot milk from a height to create a beautiful visual effect. The drink is best enjoyed immediately while the chocolate is still melting and the marshmallows are soft.

For a festive touch, garnish with a sprinkle of cocoa powder or a cinnamon stick. These bombs are perfect for holiday gatherings, cozy nights in, or as a fun activity for kids.

Each mug makes a generous serving, and you can easily double the recipe for a crowd.

Frequently asked questions

Why do the chocolate shells crack when removing them from the molds?
The shells may be too thin or the chocolate was not tempered properly. Make sure to brush a generous, even layer of chocolate and chill the molds for at least 10 minutes. Use good-quality chocolate that has been melted gently to avoid overworking it.
Can these hot chocolate bombs be made ahead of time?
Yes, you can make the spheres up to a week in advance and store them in an airtight container. Fill them with the cocoa mix and marshmallows just before serving, or store them filled if you prefer. Keep them in a cool, dry place.
What type of chocolate is best for the shells?
Use dark chocolate with at least 60% cacao for a rich flavor and good melting properties. Chocolate chips can be used, but they may contain stabilizers that affect the texture. Finely chopped chocolate bars or couverture chocolate are ideal.
How hot should the milk be?
Heat the milk to 170°F (77°C) for the best melting. If the milk is too hot, it can scald and taste bitter; if it's not hot enough, the chocolate may not melt completely. Use a thermometer for accuracy.
Can these be made without a silicone mold?
Silicone hemisphere molds are essential for creating the sphere shape. You can use a large muffin tin with rounded bottoms, but it's harder to remove the shells. Alternatively, use a plastic egg-shaped mold, but the result may not be perfectly round.

A glossy dark chocolate sphere in a glass mug being covered by steaming hot milk.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz dark chocolate (60% cacao), finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup hot cocoa mix
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows
  • 2 oz white chocolate, melted
  • 4 cups whole milk

Instructions

  1. Melt the dark chocolate in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly, until smooth and glossy. Brush the melted chocolate evenly inside each hemisphere of the silicone molds, making sure the edges are well coated. Place the molds in the refrigerator and chill for 10 minutes, until the chocolate is firm.
  2. Remove the molds from the refrigerator. Carefully pop the chocolate hemispheres out of the molds. Place 1 tablespoon of hot cocoa mix and 2 tablespoons of mini marshmallows into one half of each sphere, leaving the other half empty for sealing.
  3. Warm a clean, dry skillet over medium heat. Place the rim of the empty chocolate half on the hot skillet for about 2 seconds, just until the edge begins to melt slightly. Immediately press the warmed half onto the filled half to seal the sphere. Repeat with the remaining halves.
  4. Using a spoon, drizzle the melted white chocolate over the sealed chocolate spheres in a decorative pattern. Let the white chocolate set at room temperature for a few minutes, or place in the refrigerator for 2 minutes to speed up the process.
  5. Pour the whole milk into a small saucepan and heat over medium heat until it reaches 170°F (77°C) on a thermometer. Do not let it boil.
  6. Place one chocolate sphere in a glass mug. Pour 1 cup of the hot milk over the sphere. Watch as the chocolate melts open and the mini marshmallows rise to the surface. Stir until the chocolate is fully melted and the cocoa is smooth and velvety.
