Tips for success

For the absolute best results, do not skip the resting period after the ribs come out of the oven. Letting the meat rest for at least three minutes allows the muscle fibers to relax and reabsorb the flavorful juices that were pushed to the surface during cooking.

If you cut into the ribs immediately, those delicious juices will run out onto the cutting board, leaving the meat dry and less flavorful.

If you prefer an even deeper caramelization on your glaze, you can use the oven's broiler function during the last few minutes of cooking.

Keep a very close eye on the ribs if you choose to broil, as the high sugar content in the sweet barbecue sauce can transition from beautifully caramelized to burnt in a matter of seconds. Position the oven rack about six inches away from the broiler element for the safest results.

Variations

  • Spicy Honey Glaze: Mix a tablespoon of hot sauce and honey into the barbecue sauce before brushing it onto the ribs for a sweet and spicy kick.
  • Smoky Bourbon Ribs: Stir a splash of bourbon and a drop of liquid smoke into the sweet barbecue sauce to create a deep, smoky flavor profile.

Storage and make-ahead

Fridge
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days.
Freezer
Freeze the cooked ribs in a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 3 months; thaw overnight in the fridge.
Reheat
Reheat covered in foil at 325°F (160°C) for 15 minutes, adding a splash of water or extra sauce to retain moisture.

Store any leftover country-style ribs in an airtight container in the refrigerator within two hours of cooking to ensure safety. Properly stored, the cooked ribs will keep well for up to three to four days. To maintain the moisture and texture of the ribs during storage, keep them coated in any remaining barbecue sauce or pan juices before sealing the container.

These ribs can be partially prepared ahead of time to save effort on busy days. You can complete the slow-baking phase in the foil packet up to a day in advance, then cool and refrigerate the wrapped ribs.

When ready to serve, bring the ribs to room temperature for about thirty minutes, brush them generously with the sweet barbecue sauce, and perform the final caramelization step in a hot oven until heated through.

Serving ideas

Country-style ribs are incredibly versatile and pair beautifully with a wide variety of classic American side dishes. Serve them hot straight from the oven alongside a creamy, cold potato salad or a tangy coleslaw to provide a refreshing contrast to the rich, warm pork.

Classic baked beans, corn on the cob, or warm cornbread with honey butter also make wonderful accompaniments that complete the traditional barbecue experience.

Present the ribs on a large serving platter, drizzled with any extra warm barbecue sauce from the pan. Provide wet wipes or plenty of napkins at the table, as eating these tender, glazed ribs is a delightfully messy, hands-on experience. For an extra touch of color, you can serve them on a bed of fresh greens, keeping the presentation rustic and inviting.

Frequently asked questions

Are country-style ribs actual ribs?
Despite their name, country-style ribs are not true ribs. They are actually cut from the blade end of the pork loin or shoulder, which gives them their rich marbling and tender texture.
Can boneless country-style ribs be used?
Yes, boneless country-style ribs work perfectly for this recipe. Keep in mind that boneless cuts may cook slightly faster than bone-in ribs, so check for tenderness a bit earlier.
Why did the ribs turn out tough?
If the ribs are tough, they likely did not cook long enough or the foil packet was not sealed tightly enough, allowing the moisture to escape instead of tenderizing the meat.

Ingredients

  • 3 lb pork country-style ribs
  • 1 1/2 cups sweet barbecue sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C). Pat the country-style pork ribs dry with paper towels to remove any excess surface moisture before cooking.
  2. Place the ribs in a single layer on a large sheet of heavy-duty aluminum foil. Fold the sides of the foil over the ribs and crimp the edges tightly to create a completely sealed packet that locks in steam.
  3. Place the foil packet on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 2 hours. Carefully open one corner of the foil to check for tenderness; a fork should easily pierce the meat.
  4. Carefully open the top of the foil packet, exposing the ribs. Increase the oven temperature to 425°F (220°C). Generously brush the sweet barbecue sauce over the top and sides of the sizzling ribs.
  5. Return the uncovered ribs to the oven and bake for 10 to 15 minutes until the sauce is bubbling and caramelized. Ensure the pork reaches an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C), then remove from the oven and let the ribs rest for 3 minutes before serving.
