Tips for success
For the best flavor, choose a barbecue sauce that you love on its own—it's the main seasoning. If you like a bit of heat, add a pinch of cayenne or a few dashes of hot sauce to the slow cooker before cooking.
You can also layer the ribs and sauce in two batches if your slow cooker is small, but ensure all the meat is coated. If you prefer a thicker glaze, remove the ribs and simmer the sauce on the stovetop for 10-15 minutes until reduced, then brush it over the ribs before serving.
Leftover ribs can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. To reheat, place them in a baking dish, cover with foil, and warm in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 15-20 minutes, or until heated through.
You can also reheat in the microwave, but the oven preserves the texture better. The ribs also freeze well; wrap them tightly and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
Variations
- Spicy Kick: Add 1-2 finely chopped chipotle peppers in adobo sauce to the slow cooker along with the BBQ sauce. The smoky heat pairs beautifully with the sweet maple and bourbon flavors.
- Honey Garlic: Replace the maple bourbon BBQ sauce with a mixture of 1 cup honey, 1/2 cup soy sauce, 4 minced garlic cloves, and 1/4 cup ketchup. Omit the brown sugar for a less sweet version.
- Root Beer Ribs: Substitute the BBQ sauce with 2 cups root beer, 1/2 cup ketchup, 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, and 1 tablespoon brown sugar. Cook as directed; the root beer adds a unique sweetness and tenderizes the meat.
- Smoky Chipotle-Orange: Mix 1 cup orange marmalade, 1/2 cup chipotle BBQ sauce, 2 tablespoons soy sauce, and 1 tablespoon smoked paprika. Use this as the glaze instead of the maple bourbon sauce.
Storage and make-ahead

You can assemble the ribs in the slow cooker insert the night before and keep it covered in the refrigerator. In the morning, place the insert in the slow cooker base and cook as directed.
This makes the recipe even more convenient. Alternatively, you can cook the ribs fully, then cool and refrigerate them for up to 2 days before reheating.
Serving ideas
Serve these ribs as the star of a casual dinner or backyard-style gathering. Pair them with classic sides like coleslaw, cornbread, or baked beans. The sweet and smoky flavors also go well with a crisp green salad or grilled vegetables. For a heartier meal, serve the ribs over creamy mashed potatoes or with a side of mac and cheese.
To make it a complete feast, offer extra barbecue sauce on the side, along with pickles and pickled onions to cut through the richness. The caramelized onions from the slow cooker are a delicious topping for the ribs or can be served alongside. For drinks, a cold beer or iced tea complements the sweet, smoky flavors perfectly.

Sweet Vidalia Maple Bourbon Spare Ribs: Slow-Cooker

Ingredients
- 4 lb St. Louis style pork spare ribs
- 2 large Vidalia onions, thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup golden brown sugar, packed
- 1 1/2 cups maple bourbon BBQ sauce
Instructions
- Place the St. Louis style pork spare ribs into the slow cooker insert, arranging them in a single layer if possible, overlapping slightly if needed. Scatter the thinly sliced Vidalia onions evenly over the top of the ribs.
- Sprinkle the packed golden brown sugar over the onions and ribs. Pour the maple bourbon BBQ sauce over everything, using a spoon or spatula to spread it into an even coating. Make sure the sauce reaches the edges and some drips between the ribs.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 8 hours, or until the meat is fork-tender and easily pulls away from the bone. Avoid opening the lid during cooking to keep the heat steady. Let it rest for 3 minutes before slicing.
- Insert a fork into the thickest part of a rib and twist gently. The meat should shred easily and the internal temperature should read at least 145°F (63°C). If not tender, continue cooking for another 30 minutes and check again. Let it rest for 3 minutes before slicing.
- Using tongs or a fork, carefully transfer the ribs to a cutting board. Let them rest for at least 3 minutes before serving. Spoon some of the caramelized onions and sauce from the slow cooker over the ribs. Serve hot on a platter or individual plates.
