Before you start
Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. Prepare the chocolate gravy if not using store-bought, and have it ready to pour.
Quarter the biscuits into four pieces each using a knife or kitchen scissors. Slice the butter into thin pats. Arrange the biscuit pieces in the dish, pour over the gravy, and dot with butter. Bake immediately for best results.
Ingredients at a glance (3)
- 1 can (16.3 oz) refrigerated buttermilk biscuit dough (8 biscuits), quartered
- 2 cups prepared chocolate gravy
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter, thinly sliced
Instructions
Assemble the bake
- Prepare the baking dishHeat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray. Quarter each biscuit into four pieces and arrange them in an even layer in the dish, covering the bottom completely.Look for The biscuit pieces should be snug but not overlapping too much.Tip Use kitchen scissors to cut the biscuits quickly and evenly.
- Add the chocolate gravyPour the prepared chocolate gravy evenly over the biscuit pieces, making sure every piece is lightly coated. The gravy should pool slightly between the dough pieces.Look for The gravy will be thick and shiny, covering the dough.Tip If the gravy is too thick to pour, warm it slightly to loosen.
- Top with butter slicesScatter the thin butter slices over the top of the gravy and biscuit pieces. Distribute them evenly so they melt into the bake as it cooks.Look for Butter slices dot the surface, ready to melt.Tip Thin slices melt more evenly; use a sharp knife for clean cuts.
At this stage, the baking dish holds an even layer of raw biscuit pieces, coated with a glossy, dark chocolate gravy. The butter slices sit on top, ready to melt. The dish looks inviting, with the gravy pooling between the dough pieces. Check that the biscuit pieces are in a single layer and not piled too high, which would prevent even baking.
Bake until golden and bubbling
- Bake the biscuit bakePlace the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the biscuits are golden brown and puffed, and the gravy is bubbling around the edges. The top should be slightly browned and the gravy thickened.Look for The bake will be golden, with gravy bubbling at the sides.Tip Rotate the dish halfway through for even browning.
After 25 to 30 minutes, the bake is golden brown on top, with the biscuits puffed and the gravy bubbling around the edges. The kitchen smells of chocolate and butter.
The top should be slightly crisp in spots, while the center remains soft. Check that the biscuits are cooked through by inserting a knife—it should come out clean. If the top is browning too quickly, tent with foil.
Cool, spoon, and serve
- Cool and serveRemove the bake from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes on a wire rack. Spoon warm portions into bowls, making sure to include some gravy from the bottom of the dish.Look for The gravy will thicken slightly as it cools.Tip Serve warm for the best texture; the gravy will soak into the biscuits.
Once out of the oven, the bake cools for 5 minutes, allowing the gravy to settle and thicken slightly. When spooned, the biscuit pieces are tender and soaked with chocolate, and the gravy is thick and glossy. The dish is best served warm, with extra gravy spooned from the bottom of the pan.
Common mistakes
Avoid overmixing or overworking the biscuit dough; handle it gently to keep the pieces light. Don't pour the gravy too early—it should be at room temperature or slightly warm, not boiling, to prevent the biscuits from becoming soggy.
Also, be sure to spread the biscuit pieces evenly so they bake uniformly. Finally, don't skip the butter slices—they add essential richness and help the top brown.
How to tell it’s done
The bake is done when the biscuits are golden brown and puffed, and the gravy is bubbling around the edges and slightly thickened. A knife inserted into a biscuit piece should come out clean.
The internal temperature of the biscuits should reach at least 200°F (93°C) to ensure they are fully baked. Let it cool for 5 minutes before serving; the gravy will set slightly as it cools.
