Before you start

Ensure the slow cooker is placed on a level, heat-resistant surface away from the edge of the counter. Have all ingredients measured and ready before you begin layering.

If the turkey was stored in the refrigerator, it can be added directly to the slow cooker, but avoid leaving raw poultry at room temperature for more than thirty minutes before turning the appliance on to maintain food safety standards. Keep your workspace clear of other items to facilitate the layering process and ensure that the slow cooker insert is properly seated in the base.

Ingredients at a glance (4)
  • 1 1/2 lb turkey tenderloins
  • 1 handful herb stuffing cubes
  • 1 tsp dried sage
  • 1 can creamy chicken soup

Instructions

Layering the ingredients

  1. Prepare the slow cooker
Place the turkey tenderloins side by side at the bottom of the slow cooker insert. Ensure they are arranged in an even layer to promote uniform cooking throughout the process.
Look for The turkey should cover the base of the slow cooker without overlapping excessively.
Tip Pat the turkey dry with paper towels before placing it in the cooker to remove excess surface moisture.

At this stage, the turkey should be neatly arranged at the base of the slow cooker, topped with the stuffing and sage, and covered with the creamy soup. Everything should look ready to braise, with the soup beginning to seep down between the turkey and stuffing layers. Ensure that the soup is distributed evenly to cover the surface of the stuffing, which will help it hydrate properly during the cooking cycle and prevent any dry spots from forming on top.

Slow cooking process

  1. Add aromatics and sauce
Scatter the handful of herb stuffing cubes evenly over the top of the turkey. Sprinkle the dried sage over the stuffing, then pour the creamy chicken soup over the entire mixture, ensuring the turkey and stuffing are coated.
Look for The soup should settle around the stuffing and turkey, creating a moist environment for braising.
Tip Spread the soup with a spoon if necessary to ensure it reaches all parts of the stuffing.

During the cooking phase, the kitchen will begin to fill with the savory aroma of sage and poultry. The soup will meld with the juices from the turkey, creating a thick, cohesive sauce that coats the stuffing. The contents will look uniform and tender.

You should notice the stuffing has absorbed the liquid and the turkey has turned opaque. The slow cooker will maintain a consistent temperature, allowing the flavors to meld together into a cohesive and delicious final dish.

Final resting and plating

  1. Cook and serve
Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 4 hours. Once cooked, check that the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C). Allow the turkey to rest for 5 minutes before serving on a plate.
Look for The turkey should be opaque throughout and tender enough to pull apart easily with a fork.
Safe temperature 165°F (74°C) internal temperature (poultry)
Tip Use a digital meat thermometer to verify the temperature in the thickest part of the tenderloin.

Once finished, the turkey should be tender and steaming. After the required five-minute rest, the turkey should hold its shape when sliced or served, with the stuffing appearing soft and perfectly seasoned. It is now ready to be transferred to plates. The sauce should be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon, providing a rich, creamy finish to the tender turkey and the softened, herb-infused stuffing cubes that have absorbed all the savory goodness.

Common mistakes

Avoid lifting the lid frequently during the cooking process, as this releases heat and steam, which significantly increases the total cooking time and can lead to uneven results. Additionally, do not overfill the slow cooker; ensure there is enough space for the ingredients to cook properly without overflowing.

Finally, ensure the turkey is not cooked too long, as even in a slow cooker, poultry can become dry if left on high heat for excessive periods. Monitor the temperature carefully to avoid overcooking the lean meat.

How to tell it’s done

The dish is fully cooked when the turkey tenderloins are opaque throughout and reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) as measured by a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the meat.

The sauce should be bubbly and thick, and the stuffing should be soft and fully saturated with the creamy soup mixture. If the center of the turkey still appears pink or the temperature is below the required threshold, continue cooking for an additional fifteen minutes before checking again.

  • Poultry: 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part
