Tips for success
For the best flavor, choose a barbecue sauce with a balance of sweetness and tang. If your sauce is very thick, add a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar or water to help it spread and thin slightly during cooking. You can also stir in a tablespoon of maple syrup if you want extra sweetness.
If you have time, sear the ribs in a hot skillet with a little oil before adding them to the slow cooker. This adds a nice caramelized crust and deepens the flavor. However, the recipe works perfectly without this step—the slow cooker does all the work.
Variations
- Spicy Chipotle Ribs: Add 1–2 chopped chipotle peppers in adobo sauce along with the barbecue sauce, and replace the smoked paprika with ancho chili powder for extra heat and a deep, smoky flavor.
- Honey Garlic Ribs: Replace the maple bourbon sauce with a mix of 1 cup honey, 1/2 cup soy sauce, and 4 minced garlic cloves. Omit the paprika rub for a sweeter, stickier glaze.
- Root Beer Ribs: Substitute the barbecue sauce with 2 cups root beer and 1/2 cup ketchup, plus 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce. The soda adds a unique sweetness and helps tenderize the meat.
- Apple Cider Bourbon Ribs: Use 1 cup apple cider, 1/2 cup bourbon, and 1/2 cup ketchup in place of the barbecue sauce. Add a tablespoon of Dijon mustard for a tangy kick.

Serving ideas
Serve the ribs hot, with extra sauce spooned over the top. They pair beautifully with creamy coleslaw, cornbread, or a simple green salad.
For a heartier meal, serve over mashed potatoes or rice to soak up the extra sauce. The sweet and smoky flavors also work well with grilled vegetables or a baked potato.
These ribs are perfect for casual gatherings—set out a platter with warm tortillas, pickled onions, and a dollop of sour cream for a taco-inspired twist.
Or keep it classic with a side of mac and cheese and collard greens. However you serve them, the tender, glazed meat is sure to be the star of the table.

Smoky Maple Bourbon Country Pork Ribs: Slow-Cooker Dump Dinner

Ingredients
- 3 lb boneless country-style pork ribs
- 2 tbsp smoked paprika
- 1 tbsp garlic powder
- 1 1/2 cups maple bourbon barbecue sauce
Instructions
- Pat the country-style pork ribs dry with paper towels. Place them in the slow cooker insert. In a small bowl, stir together the smoked paprika and garlic powder. Sprinkle the spice rub evenly over all sides of the ribs, using your hands to massage it in.
- Pour the maple bourbon barbecue sauce over the seasoned ribs. Use a spoon or your hands to turn the ribs so they are fully coated in the sauce. The sauce should pool around the ribs, but not completely submerge them.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 6 to 7 hours, or on HIGH for 3 to 4 hours, until the ribs are fork-tender and easily pull apart. The sauce will bubble gently and thicken as the meat releases its juices. Let it rest for 3 minutes before slicing.
- After the minimum cook time, use a fork to test a rib. The meat should shred easily and have an internal temperature of at least 145°F (63°C). If not yet tender, continue cooking in 30-minute increments. Let it rest for 3 minutes before slicing.
- Turn off the slow cooker. Using tongs or a carving fork, transfer the ribs to a cutting board. Let them rest for at least 3 minutes before serving. Spoon some of the thickened sauce from the slow cooker over the ribs just before serving.
