Tips for success
For the best flavor, marinate the chicken in the peri-peri sauce overnight in the refrigerator before adding to the slow cooker. This isn't necessary, but it deepens the penetration of the spices.
If you do marinate, reduce the lemon juice by half, as the acid can break down the chicken too much over time. Always use a clean spoon to taste the sauce, and adjust the heat level by adding more chili flakes or a pinch of sugar to balance the heat.
To achieve a caramelized finish, after slow-cooking, transfer the chicken to a baking sheet and broil for 2-3 minutes until the edges are slightly charred. This adds a smoky dimension that mimics the grill.
Alternatively, you can thicken the sauce by mixing 1 tablespoon cornstarch with 2 tablespoons water and stirring it into the slow cooker during the last 30 minutes. This will give a glossier, more clinging sauce.
Variations
- Extra Smoky: Add 1 teaspoon smoked paprika and 1/2 teaspoon chipotle powder to the sauce before cooking for a deeper, smokier flavor. This complements the charred corn beautifully.
- Milder Heat: Use a mild peri-peri sauce and reduce the lemon juice to 2 tablespoons. Add 1 tablespoon honey to balance the heat and add a touch of sweetness. This version is kid-friendly.
- Herb Infusion: Stir in 2 tablespoons fresh oregano and 1 tablespoon fresh thyme with the garlic. The herbs will infuse the sauce with an earthy, aromatic note that pairs well with the chili.
- Citrus Burst: Add the zest of one lemon and one orange to the sauce along with the juice. The extra citrus oils enhance the bright, tangy flavor, making it even more refreshing.

Store leftover peri-peri chicken in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The flavors will continue to meld, making it even more delicious the next day.
Reheat gently in the microwave or on the stovetop until piping hot. The sauce may thicken upon cooling; add a splash of water or chicken broth when reheating if needed. Do not leave the chicken at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
This recipe can be assembled up to 24 hours in advance. Place the chicken in the slow cooker insert, pour the sauce, lemon juice, and garlic over, then cover and refrigerate. When ready to cook, place the insert into the slow cooker base and cook on LOW for 4 hours. You may need to add 15-30 minutes to the cook time if starting from a cold refrigerator. This is perfect for meal prep or busy days.
Serving ideas
Serve the peri-peri chicken as the centerpiece of a meal with traditional sides like spicy yellow rice, charred corn, and a fresh green salad. The heat of the chicken pairs well with cooling sides like a cucumber yogurt sauce (if you're not dairy-free) or a simple avocado salsa.
For a low-carb option, serve over cauliflower rice or alongside grilled vegetables. The sauce is excellent for spooning over grains or dipping crusty bread.
This chicken also makes a fantastic filling for tacos, wraps, or sandwiches. Shred the chicken and pile it onto warm tortillas with crunchy slaw and a drizzle of extra sauce. You can also serve it as an appetizer on small slider buns with pickled onions. For a festive presentation, garnish with fresh cilantro and lime wedges. The versatility of this dish makes it a go-to for any occasion.

Crockpot Peri-Peri Chicken: Fiery Citrus Slow Cooker Dinner

Ingredients
- 6 boneless, skinless chicken thighs
- 1 cup roasted red pepper and bird's eye chili Peri-Peri sauce
- 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
Instructions
- Arrange the 6 boneless, skinless chicken thighs in the bottom of the slow cooker insert in a single layer, overlapping slightly if needed. Pour the 1 cup Peri-Peri sauce evenly over the chicken, then add the lemon juice and minced garlic. Use tongs to turn the chicken pieces so they are coated on all sides with the sauce.
- Place the glass lid securely on the slow cooker. Ensure the lid is latched properly if your model has a latch. Set the slow cooker to LOW heat. Do not open the lid during the cooking time unless necessary, as this releases heat and extends cooking time.
- Cook the chicken on LOW for 4 hours. The chicken is done when it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) and is tender enough to shred easily with a fork. The sauce will be bubbling gently around the edges, and the kitchen will smell of roasted chili and citrus.
- Once the chicken is cooked, use tongs to turn the pieces in the sauce, basting them thoroughly. The sauce will have reduced slightly and intensified in flavor. For a more integrated sauce, shred the chicken directly in the slow cooker using two forks, then stir to coat every piece with the fiery citrus juices.
- Serve the Peri-Peri chicken hot, alongside spicy yellow rice and charred corn on the cob. Spoon extra sauce over each portion. Garnish with fresh cilantro if desired (not shown in the video). The chicken can be served as whole thighs or shredded, as preferred.
