Tips for success
For the best texture, cook on LOW rather than HIGH – the gentle heat keeps chicken breasts moist.
If you're in a hurry, HIGH works, but check early. To make the sauce extra creamy, whisk in a tablespoon of butter at the end (optional).
This recipe is forgiving – you can add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg for warmth, or a splash of Dijon mustard for tang.
But keep it simple: the apple-Parmesan combo is already a star. Serve with crusty bread to soak up every drop of sauce.
Variations
- Add Bacon: Cook 4 slices of bacon until crisp, crumble, and sprinkle over the finished dish. The smoky saltiness pairs beautifully with the sweet apples and creamy sauce.
- Use Thighs: Substitute boneless, skinless chicken thighs for the cutlets. Thighs are more forgiving and stay juicy even with longer cooking times. Adjust cooking time to 5-6 hours on LOW.
- Spice It Up: Add 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg to the brown sugar layer. These warm spices enhance the apple flavor and add a cozy autumn twist.
- Make It Gluten-Free: This recipe is naturally gluten-free – just serve over rice or quinoa. Ensure your Parmesan is gluten-free (most are), and check the cider label for any additives.
Storage and make-ahead

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
The sauce will thicken as it cools; reheat gently on the stovetop or microwave, adding a splash of cider or chicken broth to loosen if needed.
You can assemble the raw ingredients in the slow cooker insert the night before, cover, and refrigerate.
In the morning, place the insert in the slow cooker and cook as directed. Add 30 minutes to the cooking time if starting from cold.
Serving ideas
Serve the chicken and apples over fluffy herb rice, as shown in the video. The rice soaks up the creamy sauce beautifully. For a lower-carb option, serve over cauliflower rice or alongside roasted vegetables.
A simple green salad with a tangy vinaigrette cuts through the richness. Crusty bread is also great for dipping. This dish is hearty enough on its own, but it pairs well with a crisp white wine like Sauvignon Blanc.

Slow-Cooker Parmesan Apple Cider Chicken Cutlets

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 lb boneless, skinless chicken breast cutlets
- 2 Honeycrisp apples, cored and sliced
- 1/4 cup dark brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 cup unfiltered apple cider
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
- Place the chicken breast cutlets in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker in a single layer, overlapping slightly if needed. Scatter the sliced Honeycrisp apples over the chicken. Sprinkle the dark brown sugar evenly over the apples and chicken, then pour the unfiltered apple cider over everything.
- Place the softened cream cheese in the center of the slow cooker, on top of the apples and chicken. Sprinkle the freshly grated Parmesan cheese over the cream cheese and the rest of the contents, covering as much surface as possible.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 4 to 5 hours, or on HIGH for 2 to 3 hours, until the chicken is cooked through and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). The sauce will be bubbly and the apples soft. Avoid lifting the lid during cooking to maintain heat.
- Once the chicken is cooked, gently stir the sauce with a spoon to combine the melted cream cheese and Parmesan into a smooth, velvety sauce. If the sauce seems thin, let it cook uncovered for an additional 15 to 20 minutes to reduce slightly.
- Serve the chicken and apples over fluffy herb rice, spooning the creamy sauce generously over each portion. Garnish with fresh thyme or parsley if desired (not shown in video).
