Tips for success
For the best texture, use refrigerated tortellini rather than frozen—frozen pasta can become mushy in the slow cooker.
If you only have frozen, add it during the last 30 minutes of cooking. Also, cut the chicken into uniform cubes so they cook evenly. Aim for about 1-inch pieces.
If the sauce is too thin at the end, remove the lid and cook on HIGH for 15-20 minutes to reduce. Conversely, if it's too thick, stir in a splash of chicken broth or water.
Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper just before serving, as the cheese and marinara add salt.
Variations
- Spicy Arrabbiata Twist: Swap the marinara for arrabbiata sauce and add a pinch of red pepper flakes for heat. The spice cuts through the creamy cheese and adds a nice kick.
- Veggie-Packed Version: Add a cup of baby spinach or chopped zucchini along with the chicken. The vegetables will cook down and add extra nutrition and color.
- Turkey and Spinach Tortellini: Use ground turkey instead of chicken breast, and choose spinach-and-cheese tortellini. Brown the turkey first for extra flavor, then layer as directed.
- Creamy Pesto Swirl: Stir in 1/4 cup of pesto just before serving for a bright, herby flavor. The pesto adds a fresh note that complements the tomato and cheese.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- Freezer
- This dish freezes well for up to 3 months. Cool completely, then transfer to a freezer-safe container. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat gently.
- Reheat
- Reheat individual portions in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, or reheat the whole batch in a saucepan over medium-low heat.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat gently in the microwave or on the stovetop with a splash of water or broth to loosen the sauce.
The tortellini may absorb liquid as it sits, so adding a little moisture helps restore the creamy texture.
You can assemble the ingredients in the slow cooker insert the night before, cover, and refrigerate. In the morning, place the insert in the slow cooker base and cook as directed.
If starting from cold, you may need to add 30 minutes to the cooking time. Alternatively, cook the full recipe and freeze portions for later.
Serving ideas
Serve this dish as a main course with a side salad and crusty bread to soak up the extra sauce. It's also great on its own, as it's a complete meal with protein, carbs, and dairy. For a lighter option, serve with steamed vegetables or a green salad.
Garnish with fresh basil or parsley for a pop of color and freshness, if desired. The video keeps it simple, so it's delicious without any extras. Pair with a glass of red wine, like Chianti or Sangiovese, to complement the tomato and cheese flavors.

Slow-Cooker Mozzarella Chicken Marinara Tortellini

Ingredients
- 2 lb boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized cubes
- 20 oz refrigerated three-cheese tortellini
- 24 oz crushed San Marzano marinara sauce
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened and cut into chunks
- 2 cups shredded whole-milk mozzarella
Instructions
- Place the cubed chicken breasts in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker in an even layer. Scatter the refrigerated three-cheese tortellini over the chicken. Pour the crushed San Marzano marinara sauce over the top, making sure the liquid covers the pasta and chicken as much as possible.
- Place the softened cream cheese chunks in the center of the slow cooker. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella evenly over the top. Do not stir; the cream cheese will melt and create a creamy sauce as it cooks.
- Cover the slow cooker with the lid and cook on LOW for 4 hours, or until the chicken is cooked through and the tortellini is tender. The sauce should be bubbling gently around the edges. Do not lift the lid during the first 3 hours to keep the heat in.
- After 4 hours, use an instant-read thermometer to check the internal temperature of the chicken pieces. It must read at least 165°F (74°C). If not, continue cooking and check again after 15 minutes.
- Once the chicken is done, gently stir the mixture to combine the creamy sauce with the pasta and chicken. The cheese should be fully melted and the sauce smooth and creamy. Be careful not to break up the tortellini.
- Spoon the mozzarella chicken marinara tortellini onto plates or into bowls. Serve immediately while hot, with extra mozzarella on top if desired.
