Tips for success
For a deeper flavor, consider searing the lamb cubes in a hot skillet with a small amount of oil before adding them to the slow cooker.
This process, known as the Maillard reaction, creates a crust on the surface of the meat that adds a layer of complexity to the final stew. Be sure to deglaze the skillet with a splash of the stock to capture every bit of browned flavor.
If you prefer a thicker sauce, you can remove a small portion of the vegetables and liquid once the stew is finished and blend them until smooth, then stir the mixture back into the pot.
This creates a natural, velvety consistency without the need for additional thickeners like flour or cornstarch. Adjust the seasoning with additional salt or pepper to taste just before serving the dish to your guests.
Variations
- Root Vegetable Medley: Replace half of the carrots with parsnips or diced potatoes. These vegetables add a different texture and sweetness that complements the lamb perfectly while making the dish even more substantial.
- Herbed Lamb Stew: Add a tablespoon of fresh rosemary or thyme leaves during the last hour of cooking. The fresh herbs provide a fragrant, aromatic lift that pairs beautifully with the warm cumin.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
- Freezer
- Freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months.
- Reheat
- Reheat gently on the stovetop over low heat until steaming hot throughout.
Allow the stew to cool completely at room temperature for no more than two hours before transferring it to an airtight container. Properly stored, the stew will maintain its quality and flavor for up to three days in the refrigerator. Ensure the container is sealed tightly to prevent the absorption of other odors from the refrigerator.
This stew is an excellent candidate for making ahead, as the flavors often improve after sitting for a day. Simply follow the cooking instructions, allow the stew to cool, and store it in the refrigerator.
When ready to serve, reheat it gently on the stovetop over low heat, adding a splash of water or stock if the sauce has become too thick during cooling.
Serving ideas
Serve this lamb stew in wide, shallow bowls to showcase the tender meat and glazed carrots. It pairs beautifully with a side of crusty bread, which is perfect for mopping up the savory broth. Alternatively, serve it over a bed of fluffy steamed rice or mashed potatoes to create a more substantial and filling meal for a cold evening.
For a touch of freshness, garnish each bowl with a sprinkle of freshly chopped parsley or chives just before serving.
The bright green color contrasts beautifully with the rich, earthy tones of the stew, while the fresh herbs provide a subtle, herbaceous note that balances the warmth of the cumin. Ensure the stew is served piping hot for the best dining experience.
