Tips for success
For the best texture, cook the pasta on low heat rather than high, as high heat can cause the pasta to become mushy and the sauce to curdle. If you prefer a thinner sauce, add a splash of milk or chicken broth when stirring at the end. The sauce will thicken as it sits, so serve promptly.
To add a little freshness, consider stirring in chopped parsley or chives just before serving, though the video does not include them.
For a spicier kick, use a spicy smoked sausage or add red pepper flakes. The recipe is forgiving, so feel free to adjust the amount of sauce or cheese to suit your taste.
Variations
- Spicy Cajun Twist: Replace the smoked kielbasa with andouille sausage and add 1 teaspoon of Cajun seasoning to the sauce. The heat from the sausage and spices will give the dish a Louisiana-inspired kick.
- Vegetarian Version: Omit the kielbasa and add 2 cups of sautéed mushrooms or a can of drained chickpeas for protein. Use a vegetarian cream sauce and follow the same layering and cooking instructions.
- Broccoli and Cheddar: Add 2 cups of frozen broccoli florets on top of the pasta before adding the sauce. Swap the mozzarella for sharp cheddar and use a cheddar-style cream sauce for a comforting broccoli-cheddar pasta.
- Chicken and Bacon: Use 2 cups of shredded rotisserie chicken and 4 slices of cooked, crumbled bacon in place of the kielbasa. The chicken is already cooked, so it just needs to warm through. Use a smoky bacon-flavored cream sauce if available.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- Freezer
- This dish can be frozen for up to 2 months. Cool completely, transfer to a freezer-safe container, and freeze.
- Reheat
- Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until hot and bubbly.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The pasta will absorb more sauce as it sits, so you may want to add a splash of milk or broth when reheating to restore creaminess. Reheat gently in the microwave or on the stovetop until hot.
This dish is best made fresh, but you can assemble the ingredients in the slow cooker insert the night before and refrigerate it.
In the morning, place the insert in the slow cooker and cook as directed, adding about 30 minutes to the cooking time because the ingredients start cold. Alternatively, cook the dish fully, then cool and refrigerate; reheat portions as needed.
Serving ideas
Serve this creamy cavatappi as a main course with a simple green salad and crusty bread to soak up the sauce.
It is hearty enough to stand alone, but the bright acidity of a vinaigrette-dressed salad balances the richness. For a family-style meal, place the slow cooker on the table and let everyone serve themselves.
This dish also works well as a side dish alongside grilled meats or roasted vegetables, though it is substantial enough to be the star.
For a casual weeknight dinner, pair it with steamed broccoli or roasted asparagus. The creamy, cheesy sauce is comforting and satisfying, making it a crowd-pleaser for both kids and adults.

Slow Cooker Kielbasa Cavatappi: Creamy One-Pot Pasta

Ingredients
- 2 lb smoked kielbasa sausage, sliced into 1/2-inch medallions
- 1 lb cavatappi pasta
- 3 cups roasted garlic Parmesan cream sauce
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 2 cups shredded whole-milk mozzarella cheese
Instructions
- Place the sliced kielbasa medallions in the bottom of the slow cooker. Spread them evenly to cover the bottom. Pour the cavatappi pasta over the kielbasa, then pour the garlic cream sauce over the pasta, making sure the pasta is coated. Use a spoon to gently press the pasta down into the sauce so it is mostly submerged.
- Place the block of cream cheese in the center of the slow cooker on top of the pasta and sauce. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella evenly over the entire surface, covering the cream cheese and pasta. Do not stir; leave the ingredients stacked as they are.
- Cover the slow cooker with the lid. Cook on low heat for 3 to 4 hours, until the pasta is tender and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Resist the urge to lift the lid during the first 2 hours to keep the heat and moisture inside.
- After 3 hours, carefully remove the lid and stir the mixture thoroughly, scraping the bottom to release any stuck pasta. The cream cheese should be fully incorporated, and the sauce should be smooth and creamy. Check the pasta for doneness; it should be al dente but tender.
- Spoon the creamy cavatappi and kielbasa onto plates or into bowls. The cheese should be stretchy and the sauce rich and glossy. Serve hot, straight from the slow cooker, with extra Parmesan if desired.
