Tips for success
To enhance the flavor, consider adding a pinch of red pepper flakes if you prefer a subtle heat.
You can also toss the potatoes with a little extra salt before placing them in the cooker if you prefer a more seasoned result, though the sausage usually provides enough salt for the entire dish.
Keep the slow cooker on the warm setting if you are not serving the meal immediately after the cooking time ends. This will keep the ingredients at a safe temperature and ensure the sauce stays fluid until you are ready to plate the meal for your family or guests.
Variations
- Spicy Sausage Version: Add a teaspoon of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce along with the garlic powder to give the dish a pleasant, subtle kick that complements the richness of the butter and parmesan.
- Herb-Infused Version: Incorporate a tablespoon of dried Italian seasoning or fresh chopped parsley just before serving to add a bright, herbaceous note that balances the savory, salty flavors of the sausage and cheese.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Keep in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
- Freezer
- Freezing is not recommended as the texture of the potatoes and green beans will become mushy upon thawing.
- Reheat
- Reheat in the microwave until steaming hot.
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Ensure the food has cooled to room temperature, but do not leave it out for more than 2 hours to maintain food safety.
When reheating, use a microwave-safe dish and heat until the center is steaming hot throughout.
You can prepare the ingredients ahead of time by washing, trimming, and cutting the vegetables, and storing them in the refrigerator.
However, do not combine all the ingredients in the slow cooker insert until you are ready to start cooking, as the salt in the sausage and cheese can draw too much moisture out of the fresh vegetables.
Serving ideas
Serve this dish directly from the slow cooker for a casual, family-style meal. Use a slotted spoon to ensure you get a good mix of the sausage, green beans, and potatoes, and be sure to drizzle a little of the garlic parmesan butter sauce from the bottom of the pot over each serving.
Pair this hearty meal with a crisp side salad or some crusty bread to soak up the leftover garlic parmesan butter.
The combination of savory sausage and tender potatoes makes it a complete, satisfying dinner that requires very little extra effort to present beautifully on the table for any occasion.
