Before you start

Before starting, ensure the slow cooker insert is properly positioned within the heating base. Remove the drumsticks from the refrigerator about 15 minutes before cooking to take the chill off, though do not leave them out for longer than 30 minutes.

Measure out the chicken broth and have the gravy seasoning packet ready. Clear a space on your counter to assemble the ingredients quickly. If you are using a slow cooker liner for easier cleanup, insert it now and smooth it against the sides.

Ingredients at a glance (4)
  • 8 skinless bone-in chicken drumsticks
  • 2 cups baby carrots
  • 1 packet garlic gravy seasoning mix
  • 1 cup chicken broth

Instructions

Preparation and assembly

  1. Assemble the ingredients
Place the chicken drumsticks in the bottom of the slow cooker, arranging them in an even layer. Nestle the baby carrots in the gaps around the chicken pieces.
Look for The chicken should be at the bottom to ensure it is fully submerged in the cooking liquids.
Tip Avoid overcrowding the slow cooker to ensure even cooking throughout the entire dish.

The drumsticks should be arranged in a single layer at the bottom of the slow cooker to ensure uniform heat contact. The baby carrots should be tucked into the gaps between the chicken to allow them to cook evenly in the flavorful juices. Check that no ingredients are piled too high, which could cause the top layer to remain undercooked while the bottom layer becomes overdone.

Seasoning and liquid infusion

  1. Add seasoning and broth
Sprinkle the garlic gravy seasoning evenly over the chicken and carrots. Pour the chicken broth over the top of the contents to initiate the gravy formation.
Look for Ensure the seasoning is distributed across all pieces of chicken for balanced flavor.
Tip Using a small pitcher helps control the pour to keep the slow cooker edges clean.

The seasoning should be evenly distributed over the surface of the chicken and carrots to ensure every piece is adequately flavored. When pouring the broth, aim to cover the bottom of the slow cooker without completely submerging the chicken, as the meat will release its own juices during the cooking process. The liquids should look clear and well-blended with the seasoning powder.

Slow cooking to perfection

  1. Cook and serve
Cover and cook on low for 4 to 6 hours or on high for 2 to 3 hours until the chicken reaches 165°F (74°C). Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Look for The gravy should be thick and pourable, and the chicken should be tender enough to pull away from the bone easily.
Safe temperature 165°F (74°C) internal temperature (poultry)
Tip Check the internal temperature with a meat thermometer at the thickest part of the drumstick.

At the end of the cooking cycle, the kitchen should smell savory and aromatic, with the garlic and chicken broth providing a deep, inviting scent. The chicken should look soft and braised, with the gravy clinging to the surface.

Before serving, verify the internal temperature of the chicken has reached 165°F (74°C) and allow the meat to rest for a few minutes to ensure maximum juiciness.

Common mistakes

A common mistake is overcrowding the slow cooker, which prevents the chicken from cooking evenly and can lead to uneven texture. Avoid lifting the lid frequently during the cooking process, as this releases heat and moisture, significantly extending the required cooking time.

Another frequent error is using frozen chicken; always ensure the drumsticks are fully thawed before placing them in the slow cooker to maintain food safety and ensure the meat reaches the appropriate temperature within the intended timeframe.

How to tell it’s done

The chicken is perfectly cooked when the meat is opaque throughout and pulls away from the bone with minimal resistance. Use a meat thermometer to ensure the thickest part of the drumstick reaches an internal temperature of at least 165°F (74°C).

The gravy should have thickened into a glossy, pourable consistency that coats the back of a spoon. If the sauce appears too thin, remove the lid for the final 20 minutes to allow some liquid to evaporate.

  • Poultry: 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part
