Tips for success
For the best texture, use high-quality Alfredo sauce—look for one with real cream and Parmesan. If you prefer a thicker sauce, stir in a tablespoon of cornstarch mixed with water after cooking and let it simmer for a few minutes.
To add a pop of color and freshness, sprinkle chopped parsley or basil on top before serving (though the video doesn't show this). You can also add a pinch of red pepper flakes for a subtle kick.
This recipe is forgiving: if you're short on time, you can cook on high for 2 to 3 hours instead of low for 4, but check the pasta frequently to avoid overcooking.
For a more golden top, you can transfer the cooked mixture to a baking dish, sprinkle with extra mozzarella, and broil for 2-3 minutes until bubbly and browned. Just keep an eye on it so it doesn't burn.
Variations
- Vegetarian: Omit the chicken and add an extra cup of broccoli or sliced mushrooms. The cooking time stays the same, and the sauce will still be creamy and satisfying.
- Spicy: Add 1/2 teaspoon of red pepper flakes or a chopped jalapeño with the chicken for a subtle heat that balances the creamy sauce.
- Cheesy Herb: Stir in 1 teaspoon of dried Italian seasoning or fresh basil before serving. You can also swap the mozzarella for provolone or fontina for a different flavor.
- Protein Swap: Use boneless, skinless chicken thighs instead of tenderloins, or substitute cooked Italian sausage for the chicken (add it in the last hour to avoid overcooking).
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Keep leftovers refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
- Freezer
- Freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
- Reheat
- Reheat in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, or in the microwave in 1-minute intervals.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The pasta will absorb some sauce as it sits, so you may want to add a splash of milk or chicken broth when reheating to restore creaminess. Let the dish cool for no more than 2 hours before refrigerating.
You can assemble the ingredients in the slow cooker insert the night before, cover, and refrigerate. In the morning, place the insert in the slow cooker and cook as directed.
This saves morning prep time and lets the flavors meld. Alternatively, cook the full dish, cool, and refrigerate for up to 2 days before reheating gently on the stovetop or in the microwave.
Serving ideas
Serve this creamy pasta dish as a stand-alone meal, or pair it with a crisp green salad and garlic bread for a complete dinner. The rich sauce and tender chicken make it satisfying on its own, but a side of steamed vegetables or a simple Caesar salad adds freshness. For a heartier meal, serve over extra pasta or with crusty bread to soak up every bit of sauce.
This recipe is perfect for feeding a crowd—double the ingredients and use a larger slow cooker if needed. It's also great for potlucks and family gatherings because it travels well and stays warm in the slow cooker.
Garnish with extra Parmesan and cracked black pepper for a restaurant-style presentation. Enjoy it hot, with the cheese pulling in long, satisfying strands.

Crockpot Chicken Alfredo Penne with Broccoli

Ingredients
- 2 lb chicken breast tenderloins, cut into bite-size pieces
- 1 lb penne pasta
- 2 cups fresh broccoli florets
- 1 jar (15 oz) creamy garlic parmesan Alfredo sauce
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 2 cups shredded whole-milk mozzarella cheese
Instructions
- Place the cut chicken breast tenderloins in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker. Spread the penne pasta and broccoli florets over the chicken. Pour the Alfredo sauce evenly over the top.
- Place the block of cream cheese in the center of the slow cooker. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the entire top.
- Cover the slow cooker with the lid. Cook on low for 4 hours, or until the chicken is cooked through and the pasta is tender. Do not stir during cooking.
- After 4 hours, carefully remove the lid. Stir the mixture well, breaking up the cream cheese and combining all the ingredients into a creamy sauce. The chicken should be fork-tender and reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
- Spoon the creamy chicken Alfredo penne onto plates or bowls. Serve immediately while hot and cheesy.
