Before you start

Before starting, ensure all ingredients are fresh and ready for assembly. Peel and slice the apples and onions into uniform pieces to ensure they cook at the same rate.

Keep the chicken refrigerated until the very last moment before placing it into the slow cooker, adhering to safe food handling practices. Having the gravy mix and apple cider measured and ready will make the assembly process seamless and quick.

Ingredients at a glance (5)
  • 4 pieces boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 medium apples, sliced
  • 1 medium yellow onion, sliced into half-moons
  • 1 packet poultry gravy mix
  • 1 cup apple cider

Instructions

Layering the ingredients

  1. Assemble the base
Place the boneless skinless chicken breasts into the bottom of the slow cooker insert. Arrange the sliced apples and yellow onion slices evenly over the top of the chicken pieces.
Look for Chicken is arranged in a single layer at the bottom of the slow cooker.
Tip Ensure the chicken is raw and cold directly from the refrigerator.

The slow cooker insert should contain the chicken, apples, and onions arranged in a balanced, even layer. This foundation is crucial for ensuring that the heat and flavors distribute properly throughout the cooking time.

Before moving on, ensure the chicken is spaced out enough to allow the heat to circulate effectively around each piece.

Applying seasoning and liquid

  1. Season and pour
Sprinkle the poultry gravy mix over the chicken and fruit layer. Pour the apple cider carefully over the entire mixture to ensure the gravy mix begins to dissolve.
Look for The gravy mix is distributed evenly and the liquid covers the base ingredients.
Tip Use a small ramekin to sprinkle the gravy mix evenly for better consistency.

The poultry gravy mix should be evenly distributed over the chicken and fruit, with the apple cider poured carefully to begin the integration of flavors. At this stage, the slow cooker is ready to be covered. Check that the lid is secure, as maintaining the internal moisture is essential for the success of the braising process.

Slow cooking to perfection

  1. Slow cook and serve
Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 4 hours until the chicken is tender. Verify that the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) before serving. Let rest for 5 minutes.
Look for Chicken is opaque throughout and the sauce is thickened and pourable.
Safe temperature 165°F (74°C) internal temperature (poultry)
Tip Avoid lifting the lid during the first 3 hours to maintain a consistent temperature.

After four hours, the kitchen should smell savory and slightly sweet. The chicken is tender and the sauce has reduced to a perfect consistency. Check that the liquid is bubbling gently and the chicken is fully cooked. If the sauce needs more thickness, it can be left to rest, which also helps the meat relax.

Common mistakes

Avoid lifting the lid frequently, as this releases heat and moisture, significantly increasing the cooking time and potentially resulting in unevenly cooked chicken.

Ensure the chicken pieces are not tightly packed or overlapping excessively, which can prevent the center of the meat from reaching a safe temperature. Do not substitute the gravy mix with ingredients that have not been tested for slow cooking, as they may not thicken correctly.

How to tell it’s done

The chicken is considered done when it is opaque all the way through and reaches a minimum internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).

The apples should be soft but still hold their shape, and the gravy should have thickened into a glossy, pourable consistency. Using a meat thermometer is the most reliable way to ensure safety and quality.

  • Poultry: 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part
