Tips for success

For an even richer and more concentrated glaze, transfer the liquid from the slow cooker back into a saucepan after cooking is complete.

Simmer the sauce over medium-high heat for a few minutes until it reduces to a thick, syrupy consistency, then drizzle it generously over the chicken thighs and apples right before serving on individual plates.

To maintain a beautiful presentation, handle the cooked apple wedges very gently when transferring them from the slow cooker.

Use a slotted spoon to lift the delicate apples and place them alongside the chicken thighs, ensuring they do not break apart. A final garnish of fresh thyme leaves added just before serving provides a vibrant pop of color and fresh herbal aroma.

Variations

  • Spiced Apple Glazed Chicken: Add a pinch of ground cinnamon and ground nutmeg to the slow cooker to bring warm, autumnal spices to the dish.
  • Maple Apple Glazed Chicken: Drizzle a tablespoon of pure maple syrup over the chicken thighs before cooking for a rich, woody sweetness.

Storage and make-ahead

Fridge
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days.
Freezer
Freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months; thaw overnight in the refrigerator.
Reheat
Reheat gently in a covered skillet over medium-low heat with a splash of water or apple juice until hot.

Allow any leftover chicken and apples to cool completely at room temperature for no more than two hours before storing. Place the leftovers along with the remaining glaze into an airtight container.

Store the container in the refrigerator for up to three to four days, ensuring the chicken remains submerged in the sauce to keep it moist.

This dish can be partially prepared a day in advance to save time. Sear the chicken thighs and store them in the refrigerator overnight. The next morning, simply assemble the seared chicken, fresh apple wedges, thyme, and glossy apple glaze sauce in the slow cooker, and cook according to the recipe instructions for an effortless meal.

Serving ideas

Serve this comforting dish alongside sides that can absorb the delicious, sweet-savory glaze. Fluffy mashed potatoes, buttered egg noodles, or wild rice pilaf make excellent beds for the tender chicken thighs and soft apple wedges. Spoon extra glaze over both the chicken and the side dishes to tie the entire meal together beautifully.

For a lighter option, pair the chicken with roasted root vegetables, such as parsnips or carrots, or a crisp green salad tossed in a light vinaigrette.

The bright acidity of a simple salad helps balance the rich sweetness of the apple glaze. Serve with crusty French bread or warm dinner rolls to soak up every last drop of the luscious sauce.

Frequently asked questions

Can boneless chicken breasts be used instead of thighs?
Boneless chicken breasts can be used, but they tend to dry out much faster in a slow cooker. Reduce the cooking time to two to three hours on low and monitor the internal temperature closely to prevent drying.
What is the best way to thicken the glaze if it is too runny?
Whisk one tablespoon of cornstarch with one tablespoon of cold water to create a slurry. Stir this mixture into the slow cooker liquid during the last thirty minutes of cooking to thicken the glaze.
Can apple juice be used as a base for the glaze?
Yes, apple juice can be simmered down to create a quick homemade glaze if store-bought apple glaze is unavailable. Add a touch of cornstarch slurry to help it thicken to the right consistency.

Slow-cooked browned chicken thighs with sliced apples and thyme sprigs simmering in a slow cooker

Ingredients

  • 6 bone-in skin-on chicken thighs
  • 2 sweet apples, cored and cut into wedges
  • 1 cup glossy apple glaze sauce, store-bought or made ahead
  • 4 fresh thyme sprigs

Instructions

  1. Place the chicken thighs skin-side down in a hot skillet over medium-high heat. Sear for five to six minutes until the skin is deeply golden brown and crisp. Patting the skin completely dry beforehand ensures the best possible color and texture. Keep the chicken thighs in the refrigerator until right before cooking, and never let raw poultry sit at room temperature for more than 30 minutes.
  2. Flip the chicken thighs and sear the bottom side for two minutes. Transfer the seared chicken thighs to the insert of a slow cooker, arranging them in a single layer with the skin facing upward to preserve the crispy texture.
  3. Arrange the fresh apple wedges and fresh thyme sprigs around and between the chicken thighs in the slow cooker. Slowly ladle the glossy apple glaze sauce directly over the seared chicken skin and the apple wedges, ensuring everything is well coated.
  4. Cover the slow cooker with its lid and cook on low for four hours. The poultry is fully cooked and safe to consume when the internal temperature of the thickest part of the thigh reaches 165°F (74°C). Serve the tender chicken thighs hot with the soft apples and glaze spooned over. Allow any leftovers to cool for no more than two hours before placing them in the refrigerator.
