Before you start

Before starting, ensure that the slow cooker insert is clean and dry. Prepare the apples by washing them thoroughly and slicing them into uniform, thin pieces to ensure they cook evenly alongside the chicken.

Keep the chicken refrigerated until the very last moment before assembly, and remember to wash your hands and sanitize any surfaces that come into contact with the raw poultry to prevent cross-contamination in the kitchen.

Ingredients at a glance (4)
  • 8 chicken drumsticks
  • 2 medium apples, thinly sliced
  • 1 packet poultry seasoning
  • 1 cup apple cider

Instructions

Layering the ingredients

  1. Assemble the ingredients
Place the raw chicken drumsticks into the bottom of the slow cooker, arranging them in a single layer to ensure even cooking. Layer the thinly sliced apples over the top of the chicken, allowing them to soften and release their juices during the cooking process.
Look for Chicken is arranged in the bottom of the slow cooker.
Tip Pat the chicken dry with paper towels before placing it in the slow cooker for better browning.

At this stage, the chicken should be arranged in a single layer at the bottom of the slow cooker. The apples should be spread out to cover the chicken, creating an even foundation. Check that the slow cooker is placed on a stable surface away from the edge of the counter and that the power cord is clear of any heat sources or water.

Adding seasonings and glaze

  1. Season and glaze
Sprinkle the poultry seasoning evenly over the chicken and apples. Pour the apple cider over the contents of the slow cooker, ensuring everything is lightly coated to build the flavorful base of the glaze.
Look for Liquid covers the bottom of the slow cooker.
Tip Distribute the seasoning evenly to ensure every piece of chicken is well-flavored.

The seasoning should be distributed evenly across the chicken and apple layers. When pouring the apple cider, aim to cover as much of the surface as possible.

Ensure that no seasoning is stuck to the sides of the slow cooker insert, as this can burn during the long cooking process. Verify that the lid is locked or placed securely before starting the machine.

Slow cooking and resting

  1. Cook and serve
Cover and cook on low for 4 hours until the chicken is tender and cooked through. Ensure the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 165°F (74°C). Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before serving to allow the juices to redistribute.
Look for Chicken is tender and glossy with the reduced cider glaze.
Safe temperature 165°F (74°C) internal temperature (poultry)
Tip The residual heat will continue to cook the chicken slightly during the resting period.

During the final phase, the kitchen will begin to smell savory and sweet. The chicken should be tender, and the liquid will have reduced into a rich, glossy glaze. Once the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C), turn off the slow cooker and let the chicken rest for 5 minutes. This rest period is vital for achieving the best texture and flavor.

Common mistakes

Avoid over-crowding the slow cooker, as stacking the chicken too high can prevent even heat distribution, potentially leading to uneven cooking. Do not remove the lid frequently during the cooking process, as each time you lift the lid, heat escapes and the cooking time will need to be extended.

Additionally, ensure you do not use frozen chicken, as it may not reach the safe internal temperature quickly enough in a slow cooker environment.

How to tell it’s done

The chicken is perfectly cooked when the meat is tender and easily separates from the bone. Using a digital meat thermometer is the most reliable way to check for doneness; insert the probe into the thickest part of the drumstick, avoiding the bone, to ensure it registers at least 165°F (74°C).

The glaze should appear thickened and glossy, coating the chicken thoroughly, while the apple slices should be soft and translucent.
