Before you start

Before beginning, gather all your equipment and ingredients on a clean, dry workspace. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking. Wash and dry the apples thoroughly, as any residual moisture or wax can prevent the caramel from adhering to the skin.

Set out your sprinkles in a small bowl for easy access, and ensure your caramel is melted and ready in a deep, heat-proof container that allows for full submersion.

Ingredients at a glance (4)
  • 6 medium red apples, washed and dried
  • 6 wooden sticks
  • 1 cup thick melted caramel
  • 2 tbsp orange and black sprinkles

Instructions

Preparation and Skewering

  1. Prepare the apples
Thoroughly wash and dry the red apples to ensure the caramel adheres properly. Insert one wooden stick firmly into the stem end of each apple, pushing down deep enough to provide a secure handle for dipping.
Look for ensure the apples are completely dry
Tip Use a paper towel to remove any moisture from the skin.

At the end of this phase, all apples should be securely skewered and completely dry. The workspace should be organized with the parchment-lined tray ready to receive the dipped apples. Check that each stick is inserted deeply into the core so the apples feel balanced and stable when held.

Dipping in Caramel

  1. Dip and coat
Place the melted caramel into a deep, wide bowl. Holding the apple by the stick, dip it into the caramel, twisting to ensure an even, thick coating over the entire surface. Allow excess caramel to drip off back into the bowl before proceeding.
Look for the caramel covers the apple evenly
Tip Work quickly so the caramel does not harden before you finish dipping.

The apples should be completely coated with a smooth, even layer of caramel. Watch for any thin spots or drips; if the coating is too thin, you can perform a second dip once the first layer has cooled slightly. The caramel should be thick enough to hold its shape.

Adding Sprinkles

  1. Add festive decoration
While the caramel is still warm and tacky, use a spoon to shower the orange and black sprinkles over the apple. Rotate the apple as you sprinkle to achieve full coverage. Place the finished apples on a parchment-lined baking sheet to set.
Look for the sprinkles stick firmly to the warm caramel
Tip Sprinkle over the parchment paper to catch any extra decorations for easy cleanup.

The finished apples should be coated in a vibrant layer of orange and black sprinkles. The decorations should be evenly distributed and firmly set into the caramel surface.

Ensure the apples are placed on the parchment paper without touching each other to prevent them from sticking together while they finish cooling.

Common mistakes

Avoid using apples straight from the refrigerator, as the temperature difference can cause the caramel to slide off before it sets. Another common mistake is failing to remove the wax layer from the apple skin; a quick wash with warm water and a scrub can help the caramel bond better.

Finally, do not rush the cooling process; placing the apples in the refrigerator too early can cause condensation, which may soften the caramel and make it sticky.

How to tell it’s done

The caramel apples are finished once the caramel has cooled and set firmly against the apple skin. The surface should be smooth, glossy, and non-tacky to the touch. The sprinkles should be embedded securely into the coating.

When lifted by the stick, the apple should feel sturdy and the caramel should not be sliding or dripping. Allow the apples to rest in a cool, dry place for at least fifteen minutes to ensure the structure is fully stable.
