Before you start

Before starting, ensure the chicken drumsticks are thawed if previously frozen. Pat them dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. Drain the canned peaches, reserving the juice if you want to add extra liquid. Measure the honey and soy sauce. Have the slow cooker ready and plugged in. No other preparation is needed — this recipe is truly dump-and-go.

Ingredients at a glance (4)
  • 8 chicken drumsticks (about 2 1/2 lb total)
  • 1 can (15 oz) sliced peaches in juice, drained
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce

Instructions

Prep and Load

  1. Arrange the Chicken
Place the chicken drumsticks in the slow cooker insert, arranging them in a single layer, slightly overlapping if needed. They don't need to be perfectly spaced, but try to keep them in one even layer for even cooking.
Look for The drumsticks are nestled in the bottom of the slow cooker, raw and ready.
Tip Pat the drumsticks dry with paper towels before adding them to the slow cooker for better browning, though browning is not required.
  2. Add the Peaches
Scatter the drained sliced peaches over the chicken, distributing them evenly. They will break down slightly during cooking, creating a sweet, jammy sauce.
Look for The peaches cover the chicken in a bright, golden layer.
Tip If using canned peaches in syrup, reduce the honey slightly to avoid over-sweetness.

At this point, the slow cooker insert holds the chicken drumsticks in a single layer, topped with the sliced peaches. The raw chicken is pale pink, and the peaches are bright golden.

The honey and soy sauce have been poured over, creating a glossy, dark amber coating. The slow cooker is ready to be turned on, and the kitchen smells faintly of sweet and savory promise.

Slow Cook

  1. Make the Sauce
In a small bowl, stir together the honey and soy sauce until well combined. Pour the mixture evenly over the chicken and peaches.
Look for The sauce pools around the chicken, coating the peaches and drumsticks.
Tip For a thicker glaze, you can add a cornstarch slurry at the end, but the natural juices will reduce slightly.
  2. Slow Cook
Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 4 to 5 hours, or on high for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, until the chicken is tender and cooked through. The internal temperature of the thickest part of the drumstick should reach 165°F (74°C).
Look for The sauce is bubbling gently, and the chicken is pulling away from the bone.
Safe temperature 165°F (74°C) internal temperature (poultry)
Tip Avoid lifting the lid during cooking to maintain a steady temperature.

After a few hours, the sauce is bubbling gently around the edges. The chicken is deeply browned, and the peaches have softened and started to break down. The aroma is rich and inviting, with notes of honey, soy, and fruit.

A fork inserted into the thickest part of the drumstick should meet little resistance, and the meat should be pulling away from the bone. The internal temperature should be at least 165°F (74°C).

Serve and Glaze

  1. Finish and Serve
Once the chicken is cooked, use tongs to transfer the drumsticks to a serving platter. Spoon the peaches and sauce over the top. Serve hot, with steamed rice if desired.
Look for The drumsticks are glazed and sticky, with tender meat that falls off the bone.
Tip For a thicker sauce, simmer the remaining liquid in a small saucepan over medium heat for 5 minutes before spooning over the chicken.

The chicken is arranged on a platter, with the peaches and sauce spooned over the top. The glaze is sticky and glossy, coating each drumstick. The meat is so tender it falls off the bone with a gentle nudge. The sauce is thick enough to cling to the chicken, and the peaches are soft and jammy. Serve immediately, with rice or bread to soak up the extra sauce.

Common mistakes

One common mistake is lifting the lid to check on the chicken, which lets out heat and extends cooking time. Trust the process and keep the lid on. Another is overcooking, which can make the chicken dry, though the slow cooker's low heat makes this less likely.

Also, be sure to distribute the peaches and sauce evenly so every piece of chicken is coated. Finally, don't skip draining the peaches, as excess liquid can make the sauce too thin.

How to tell it’s done

The chicken is done when it is fork-tender and the internal temperature in the thickest part of the drumstick reaches 165°F (74°C). The meat should easily pull away from the bone.

The sauce will have thickened slightly and become glossy. If you prefer a thicker sauce, you can remove the chicken and simmer the sauce on the stovetop for a few minutes to reduce it further.

  • Poultry: 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part
