Before you start

Before starting, ensure your workspace is clean and organized. Have your ground turkey, sliced onions, burger sauce, Swiss cheese, and crescent dough sheet ready. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) so it is fully heated by the time you finish the assembly.

If using a large rectangular baking dish, make sure it is clean and dry. Keep the crescent dough refrigerated until the very last second to ensure it stays easy to handle and puffs up correctly in the oven.

Ingredients at a glance (5)
  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1 large onion, sliced into half-moons
  • 1/2 cup creamy burger sauce, made ahead
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 can crescent dough sheet

Instructions

Preparing the Base

  1. Prepare the Base
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In the bottom of a large rectangular baking dish, spread the raw ground turkey and the sliced onions evenly. Ensure the meat is broken into small crumbles to allow for even cooking throughout the dish.
Look for The turkey should be spread in an even layer across the bottom of the dish.
Tip Ensure the onions are sliced thinly so they cook through at the same rate as the ground turkey.

The ground turkey and onions should be spread in an even, thin layer across the bottom of the dish. The turkey should be broken down into fine, uniform crumbles.

This provides a stable foundation for the subsequent layers and ensures that the meat cooks evenly throughout the baking process, preventing any large clumps that might remain undercooked or dry.

Layering the Ingredients

  1. Assemble the Layers
Pour the creamy burger sauce over the turkey and onion mixture, spreading it to cover the base. Layer the Swiss cheese slices over the sauce until the entire surface is covered. Finally, drape the crescent dough sheet over the cheese, pressing the edges slightly against the sides of the baking dish to secure it.
Look for The dough should fully cover the cheese and sauce layer completely.
Tip If the dough is sticky, lightly dust your fingers with flour before handling it.

The burger sauce should be spread evenly over the turkey, followed by a complete layer of Swiss cheese. The crescent dough should be draped over the top, covering everything completely. Check that the edges of the dough are gently tucked or pressed to the sides of the dish to keep the moisture inside during the baking phase.

Baking to Golden Perfection

  1. Bake and Serve
Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25 minutes or until the crescent crust is golden brown and the turkey reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). Remove from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Look for The crescent dough should be puffed and golden brown on top.
Safe temperature 165°F (74°C) internal temperature (poultry)
Tip Use a meat thermometer to verify the temperature of the turkey crumbles in the center.

The top should be a beautiful, uniform golden brown color. The crust should feel firm to the touch and appear puffed. When you carefully lift a corner with a spatula, you should see the cheese melted into the sauce and the turkey cooked through. The kitchen will smell like toasted bread and savory roasted meat, indicating the dish is ready.

Common mistakes

A common mistake is failing to break the ground turkey into small enough pieces, which can lead to uneven cooking. Another error is not sealing the crescent dough properly at the edges, which may cause the sauce to bubble over excessively.

Ensure the oven is fully preheated before placing the dish inside; otherwise, the dough may stay soft rather than becoming flaky and crisp. Avoid overcrowding the dish with too many onions, as this can release excess moisture that softens the crust.

How to tell it’s done

The dish is perfectly done when the crescent dough topping is deep golden brown and puffed. The internal temperature of the ground turkey must reach 165°F (74°C) to be safely cooked.

You can test this by inserting a food thermometer into the center of the dish, ensuring it reaches the turkey crumbles. Let the bake rest for 5 minutes after taking it out of the oven to allow the juices to redistribute and the cheese to set slightly for easier serving.

  • Poultry: 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part
  • Ground meat: 160°F (71°C) in the thickest part
