Tips for success

For an extra level of flavor, you can lightly toast the minced garlic in a small amount of olive oil before adding it to the browned beef. This mellows the sharp bite of the garlic and releases more of its natural oils.

Additionally, keep an eye on the cheese during the final five minutes of baking; if it is browning too quickly, you can loosely cover the top of the baking dish with a piece of aluminum foil.

Consider using a mix of different cheeses to customize the flavor profile. While mozzarella provides the classic cheese pull, adding a bit of provolone or fontina can introduce a more complex, nutty undertone that complements the garlic and bacon.

Always grate your cheese from a block rather than using pre-shredded varieties, as the anti-caking agents in pre-shredded cheese can prevent it from melting as smoothly as you might desire for a lasagna.

Variations

  • Spicy Cheeseburger Lasagna: Add a tablespoon of crushed red pepper flakes to the beef mixture while browning to introduce a subtle heat that cuts through the richness of the cheese.
  • Vegetable-Packed Version: Sauté finely diced bell peppers and onions alongside the garlic to incorporate extra texture and a hint of sweetness to the beef base.

Storage and make-ahead

Fridge
Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Freezer
Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and foil for up to 2 months.
Reheat
Bake at 350°F (175°C) until heated through or microwave in individual portions.

If you have leftovers, allow them to cool to room temperature for no more than two hours before transferring them to an airtight container. Properly stored, the lasagna will maintain its quality in the refrigerator for up to three days. When you are ready to eat, ensure the container is sealed tightly to prevent the pasta from drying out or absorbing other odors from the refrigerator.

You can assemble the lasagna entirely up to 24 hours in advance. Simply cover the unbaked dish tightly with plastic wrap and store it in the refrigerator. When you are ready to bake, remove the plastic wrap and let the dish sit on the counter for about 20 minutes to take the chill off before placing it into the preheated oven. You may need to add an extra 5 to 10 minutes to the baking time.

Serving ideas

Serve the lasagna warm, ideally paired with a simple side dish like a crisp green salad or roasted vegetables to contrast the richness of the cheese and beef.

Use a sharp, thin-bladed knife to cut through the layers cleanly, and a wide metal spatula to lift each portion carefully onto a plate. The combination of the savory beef and the crispy bacon topping makes this a complete meal in itself.

If you are serving this for a gathering, consider placing the baking dish in the center of the table for an impressive, family-style presentation.

You can provide extra grated parmesan or a small bowl of red pepper flakes on the side for guests who prefer a bit of heat. Ensure that you have a serving spoon nearby to catch any stray bits of cheese or bacon that might fall during the plating process.

Frequently asked questions

Can this be made ahead of time?
Yes, you can assemble the lasagna and keep it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours before baking. Simply remove it from the fridge 20 minutes before putting it in the oven to ensure even heating.
What is the best way to prevent the lasagna from being too dry?
Ensure that the pasta is cooked al dente and that the beef mixture has enough moisture. If you notice the dish looks dry before baking, add a small splash of beef broth to the bottom of the pan to help steam the noodles.
Why is the bacon added after baking?
Adding the bacon after the lasagna has baked keeps it perfectly crispy. If it were baked with the lasagna, the moisture from the cheese and pasta would cause the bacon to soften and lose its signature crunch.

Ingredients

  • 2 lb ground beef
  • 8 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1 lb lasagna noodles, cooked
  • 3 cups shredded cheese blend
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

Instructions

  1. Cook the lasagna noodles in boiling salted water according to package directions until al dente. Drain well. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat until fully cooked. Drain excess fat. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for one minute until fragrant. Ensure the beef reaches an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) to be fully cooked.
  2. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a 9x13 baking dish, spread a layer of the cooked ground beef mixture. Top with a layer of cooked lasagna noodles, followed by a generous portion of the shredded cheese blend. Repeat these layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a final layer of cheese on top.
  3. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbling. Remove from the oven and immediately sprinkle the crumbled bacon and grated parmesan cheese over the top. Let the dish rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving to ensure the layers set properly.
