Tips for success
For the best texture, use a good-quality marinara with a smooth consistency—chunky sauces can make the final dish watery. If you prefer a thicker sauce, stir in a tablespoon of tomato paste after cooking. To enhance the cheesy crust, you can switch the slow cooker to HIGH for the last 15 minutes, but watch closely to prevent burning. The dish is forgiving, so feel free to adjust the herbs to your taste.
When serving, use a large spoon to scoop from the bottom to get all the layers. The chicken will be very tender and may break apart slightly—that's a good thing. Pair with a simple green salad and garlic bread for a complete meal.
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, and the flavors will deepen overnight. Reheat gently in the microwave or on the stovetop.
Variations
- Spicy Arrabbiata Twist: Replace the marinara with arrabbiata sauce and add ½ teaspoon of red pepper flakes with the Italian seasoning for a spicy kick. The rest of the recipe stays the same.
- Vegetarian Slow-Cooker Ziti: Omit the chicken and increase the pasta to 1½ pounds. Add 1 cup of sliced mushrooms or spinach at the bottom of the slow cooker. Cook on LOW for 3 to 4 hours, until the pasta is tender.
- Sausage and Peppers Variation: Replace the chicken with 1 pound of Italian sausage, casings removed and crumbled. Add 1 sliced bell pepper and 1 sliced onion along with the sausage. Cook on LOW for 5 to 6 hours.
- Extra-Cheesy Alfredo Ziti: Stir 1 cup of heavy cream into the marinara before pouring it over the pasta. Top with an extra ½ cup of shredded mozzarella. The cream adds richness and a silkier sauce.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container within 2 hours. Use within 4 days. Reheat gently, adding a splash of water or marinara if needed.
- Freezer
- Freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
- Reheat
- Reheat on the stovetop over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until hot. Add a little water or marinara to loosen the sauce.
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator within 2 hours of cooking. The ziti will keep for up to 4 days. To reheat, spoon portions into a microwave-safe dish and heat in 30-second intervals, stirring occasionally, until hot throughout.
Alternatively, reheat in a saucepan over medium-low heat with a splash of water or marinara to loosen the sauce. The pasta will soften further upon reheating.
This dish is ideal for meal prep. Assemble the layers in the slow cooker insert up to 24 hours in advance, cover, and refrigerate. When ready to cook, place the insert in the slow cooker base and cook on LOW for 4 to 5 hours.
You may need to add 30 minutes of cooking time because the ingredients start cold. The cooked dish can also be frozen for up to 3 months; thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
Serving ideas
Serve the Parmesan chicken baked ziti hot, straight from the slow cooker. Scoop generous portions onto plates or shallow bowls, making sure to get some of the cheesy top in each serving.
The dish is hearty enough to stand alone, but a side of crusty bread or a simple green salad with lemon vinaigrette balances the richness. For a touch of freshness, sprinkle with chopped parsley or basil before serving, though the video does not include this.
For a family-style presentation, bring the slow cooker to the table and let everyone serve themselves. The bubbling cheese and steam are part of the appeal. This dish pairs well with a medium-bodied red wine, like a Chianti or Sangiovese. If you have leftovers, they make a great lunch the next day—serve cold or reheated, the flavors are even better after sitting.

Parmesan Chicken Baked Ziti: Slow-Cooker Comfort

Ingredients
- 2 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized cubes
- 1 lb ziti pasta
- 24 oz sweet basil marinara sauce
- 2 tsp Italian herb seasoning
- 2 cups shredded Italian four-cheese blend
- 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano
Instructions
- Place the cubed chicken breasts in an even layer in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker. Sprinkle the ziti pasta over the chicken, then pour the marinara sauce over the pasta. Sprinkle the Italian herb seasoning evenly over the sauce. Do not stir.
- Sprinkle the shredded Italian four-cheese blend and the freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano evenly over the sauce. Cover the slow cooker with the lid.
- Cook on LOW for 4 to 5 hours, or on HIGH for 2 to 3 hours, until the chicken is cooked through and the pasta is tender. The cheese will melt and bubble around the edges. Do not stir during cooking.
- After the minimum cooking time, insert an instant-read thermometer into a few chicken cubes. The chicken is safe to eat when it registers at least 165°F (74°C). If it hasn't reached that temperature, continue cooking for 30 minutes and check again.
- Turn off the slow cooker and let the ziti rest for 5 minutes before serving. This allows the sauce to settle and the cheese to set slightly. Serve hot, scooping from the slow cooker directly onto plates.
