Tips for success

For an extra depth of flavor, add a splash of dry white wine or a squeeze of fresh lemon juice into the butter mixture before pouring it over the seafood. The acidity helps to cut through the richness of the butter and enhances the natural sweetness of the crab and lobster. Ensure any additions are whisked well into the butter so that the flavor is uniform throughout the entire dish.

If the garlic Parmesan butter appears too thin at the end of the cooking time, you can carefully remove the seafood and whisk a teaspoon of cornstarch mixed with a tablespoon of cold water into the remaining liquid in the slow cooker. Set it to high for five minutes to thicken the sauce into a rich glaze. This extra step provides a more luxurious coating for the meat when you spoon it over the final platter.

Variations

  • Spicy Garlic Butter: Whisk one teaspoon of red pepper flakes into the melted butter before adding it to the slow cooker for a subtle, lingering heat that pairs beautifully with the sweet lobster meat.
  • Lemon Herb Zest: Add the zest of one whole lemon and two tablespoons of fresh chopped chives to the butter sauce to brighten the flavors and provide a refreshing citrus contrast to the rich Parmesan.

Storage and make-ahead

Fridge
Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
Reheat
Gently reheat in the oven at 300°F (150°C) until just warmed through, or microwave on low power in short intervals to avoid overcooking the shellfish.

If you have leftovers, allow them to cool to room temperature for no more than two hours before transferring them to an airtight container. Keep the seafood in the shell if possible, as this helps prevent the meat from drying out while stored in the refrigerator.

Consume the leftovers within two days to ensure the best quality and safety, as seafood is highly perishable and loses its delicate texture quickly.

You can prepare the garlic Parmesan herb butter up to two days in advance and store it in the refrigerator. When you are ready to cook, simply melt the butter mixture in the microwave or on the stovetop before pouring it over the arranged seafood.

Do not assemble the raw seafood in the slow cooker ahead of time, as the ingredients should be fresh and chilled until the exact moment you begin the cooking process.

Serving ideas

Serve this dish family-style on a large, warmed platter placed in the center of the table. Provide small bowls of extra melted garlic butter for dipping and offer crackers or shells for the crab legs.

A side of crusty sourdough bread or a light, crisp green salad with a lemon vinaigrette complements the richness of the butter sauce perfectly, balancing the meal without overpowering the delicate flavors of the king crab and lobster.

Ensure all diners have access to seafood crackers and small forks to make the process of extracting the meat easier. Because this is a hands-on meal, providing warm, damp towels or finger bowls with lemon slices is a thoughtful touch for cleaning up after the feast.

Encourage guests to dip every piece of the shellfish into the flavorful sauce at the bottom of the platter to maximize the experience of the garlic Parmesan infusion.

Frequently asked questions

Can the potatoes be swapped for another vegetable?
Yes, you can substitute the potatoes with chunks of carrots or parsnips, which also hold their shape well during the slow-cooking process. Ensure they are cut into uniform, bite-sized pieces so they cook through at the same rate as the shellfish.
Why is it important to use a low heat setting?
The low setting provides the gentle, consistent heat necessary to cook the delicate shellfish without toughening the proteins. High heat can cause the butter to separate and the lobster meat to become rubbery, so maintaining a steady low temperature is essential for the best results.
Is it possible to cook this on high if short on time?
Cooking on high is not recommended for this recipe, as it will likely result in overcooked, dry seafood. The three-hour simmer on low is specifically designed to achieve the perfect balance of tender meat and fully cooked potatoes. Patience is key to ensuring the shellfish remains succulent and flavorful.
