Before you start

Before you begin, ensure your oven is fully preheated to 375°F (190°C) to facilitate consistent cooking. Have all your ingredients measured and ready to go. Ensure your baking dish is clean and placed on a stable surface.

If you are using frozen meatballs, keep them in the freezer until the very last second to ensure they remain firm while you arrange them in the baking dish with the dry spaghetti.

Ingredients at a glance (5)
  • 8 oz dry spaghetti, broken in half
  • 12 oz frozen precooked beef meatballs
  • 24 oz marinara sauce
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

Assembly

  1. Assemble the ingredients
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the broken dry spaghetti into the bottom of a large rectangular baking dish. Arrange the frozen meatballs evenly over the top of the pasta noodles.
Look for The pasta should be spread out in an even layer to ensure it cooks through properly without clumping.
Tip Breaking the spaghetti allows it to fit easily into the dish and ensures even coverage by the sauce.

At the end of this phase, the spaghetti should be evenly distributed in the baking dish, with the meatballs placed uniformly across the surface.

Ensure the pasta is not clumped together, as this will prevent it from cooking through. The dish is ready to receive the sauce once the ingredients are layered properly.

Baking with Sauce

  1. Add sauce and bake
Whisk together the marinara sauce and water in a pitcher, then pour the mixture over the spaghetti and meatballs until they are completely submerged. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 35 minutes until the internal temperature of the meatballs reaches 160°F (71°C).
Look for The liquid should just cover the noodles to ensure they hydrate and soften during the baking process.
Safe temperature 160°F (71°C) internal temperature (ground meat)
Tip Ensure the foil is sealed tightly around the edges of the baking dish to trap the steam for tender pasta.

When the foil is removed, the spaghetti should be tender and the sauce should have thickened around the meatballs. The mixture will be very hot, and the meatballs will be fully cooked through. Check that the pasta is soft before proceeding to add the cheese, as it will not soften further once the cheese is added.

Melting the Cheese

  1. Add cheese and finish
Remove the foil, sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the top, and return to the oven uncovered. Bake for an additional 10 minutes or until the cheese is golden and bubbling. Let the dish rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Look for The cheese should be melted and golden brown in spots, and the sauce should be thick and bubbling.
Tip Letting the dish rest helps the sauce thicken slightly and makes serving much easier.

The final phase is complete when the mozzarella is fully melted and shows golden brown spots. The sauce should be bubbling around the edges of the dish, and the entire meal should look cohesive and inviting. Let the dish rest for a few minutes so the sauce thickens to the perfect consistency for serving.

Common mistakes

A common mistake is using too little liquid, which can result in undercooked or dry pasta. Ensure the noodles are mostly submerged in the sauce and water mixture.

Another error is failing to cover the dish tightly with foil, which allows essential steam to escape and prevents the pasta from softening properly. Avoid over-browning the cheese by watching the final minutes closely, as it can burn quickly.

How to tell it’s done

The dish is done when the pasta is tender and the meatballs have reached an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C). The sauce should be thick and bubbly, and the mozzarella cheese on top should be melted and golden in spots.

Always use a digital thermometer to verify the meatball temperature for safety. Let the dish rest for 5 minutes to allow the sauce to settle before serving.

  • Ground meat: 160°F (71°C) in the thickest part
