Before you start

Before you begin cooking, gather all of your ingredients and equipment to ensure a smooth process. Measure out the creamy sauce, meat sauce, and shredded mozzarella cheese.

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) so it is hot and ready when the casserole is assembled. Grease your 9x13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray or a light coating of olive oil to prevent the pasta from sticking to the sides.

Ingredients at a glance (4)
  • 20 oz frozen cheese ravioli
  • 15 oz creamy sauce
  • 24 oz meat sauce
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

Instructions

Preparing and Coating the Pasta

  1. Preheat and Prepare
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or olive oil to prevent the pasta from sticking during baking, and set it aside.
Look for The oven is fully preheated and the baking dish is evenly greased.
Tip Greasing the dish well ensures easy slicing and cleanup later.
  2. Coat the Ravioli
In a large mixing bowl, combine the frozen cheese ravioli and the creamy sauce. Gently toss the mixture until every single ravioli is thoroughly and evenly coated in the rich sauce.
Look for The ravioli are completely covered in a thick layer of creamy sauce.
Tip Do not thaw the ravioli beforehand; baking them from frozen keeps them tender.

At the end of this phase, the oven will be fully preheated and the baking dish prepared. The frozen cheese ravioli will be completely and evenly coated in the rich, velvety creamy sauce, ensuring they are ready to bake without sticking together.

Layering the Casserole

  1. Layer the Casserole
Spread half of the meat sauce evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Arrange the coated ravioli in a single layer over the sauce, then spoon the remaining meat sauce evenly over the top.
Look for The ravioli are neatly layered and fully submerged in the meat sauce.
Tip Use a spatula to spread the sauce all the way to the edges of the dish.

At the end of this phase, the baking dish will be neatly layered with the savory meat sauce on the bottom, followed by the cream-coated ravioli, and topped with the remaining meat sauce. The layers should look uniform and the pasta should be fully covered.

Baking to Golden Perfection

  1. Top and Bake
Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the top of the casserole. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 40 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until golden.
Look for The mozzarella is melted, bubbling at the edges, and beautifully golden brown.
Tip Spray the foil with nonstick spray to prevent the cheese from sticking.

At the end of this phase, the casserole will be piping hot and bubbling vigorously around the edges.

The mozzarella cheese on top will be completely melted, developing a beautiful golden-brown crust with some deeper brown spots. When you lift a slice, the cheese should stretch dramatically and release a cloud of savory steam.

Common mistakes

One common mistake is boiling the ravioli before assembling the casserole, which leads to overcooked, mushy pasta that falls apart during baking. Another error is failing to cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil for the first part of the baking time.

The foil traps the steam, which is absolutely necessary to cook the frozen ravioli through. Without the foil, the top layer of cheese will burn before the pasta in the center is fully cooked.

How to tell it’s done

To determine if the casserole is fully cooked, insert a butter knife into the center; it should slide through the ravioli easily with no resistance, indicating the pasta is tender.

The cheese on top should be completely melted and golden brown, and the sauce should be bubbling actively at the edges of the dish. Since all components are pre-cooked, you only need to ensure the casserole is heated through to the center.
