Tips for success
For the best flavor, sear the ribs in a hot skillet with a little oil before adding them to the slow cooker. This adds a caramelized crust that deepens the overall taste.
If you're short on time, skip this step—the ribs will still be delicious. Another tip: use a good-quality maple bourbon BBQ sauce, or make your own with real maple syrup and bourbon for a more pronounced flavor.
To make the sauce extra glossy, skim off the fat from the surface after cooking, then reduce the sauce on the stovetop until it coats the back of a spoon.
For a spicy kick, add a pinch of cayenne or a few dashes of hot sauce to the BBQ sauce before pouring it over the ribs. You can also add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to balance the sweetness.
Variations
- Spicy Maple Bourbon Ribs: Add 1 tablespoon of chipotle hot sauce or 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to the BBQ sauce before pouring over the ribs. The heat balances the sweetness, giving the ribs a smoky, spicy kick.
- Honey Garlic Ribs: Replace the maple bourbon BBQ sauce with a mixture of 1/2 cup honey, 1/4 cup soy sauce, and 4 minced garlic cloves. Cook as directed, then thicken the sauce on the stovetop for a glossy, sweet-savory glaze.
- Root Beer BBQ Ribs: Substitute the maple bourbon BBQ sauce with a bottle of root beer and 1 cup of ketchup. The root beer adds a deep, caramelized sweetness, and the ribs cook up tender with a sticky, dark glaze.
- Smoky Chipotle Ribs: Mix 2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce (minced) into the BBQ sauce along with 1 tablespoon of adobo sauce. This adds a rich, smoky heat that pairs perfectly with the maple and bourbon.

Serving ideas
Serve these ribs as the main event with classic sides like coleslaw, baked beans, cornbread, or potato salad. The sweet and smoky glaze pairs well with tangy, creamy sides that balance the richness. For a low-carb option, serve with roasted vegetables or a crisp green salad.
For a casual gathering, set out the ribs on a large platter with extra sauce on the side, and let everyone pull their own pieces. Use carving forks or tongs to handle the tender meat. Garnish with fresh rosemary sprigs or chopped parsley for a pop of color, if desired.

Maple Bourbon BBQ Ribs: Slow-Cooker Fall-Off-the-Bone

Ingredients
- 2 lb pork baby back ribs (about 2 racks)
- 10 cloves garlic, smashed
- 4 sprigs fresh rosemary
- 1 1/2 cups maple bourbon BBQ sauce
Instructions
- Remove the ribs from the refrigerator and let them sit at room temperature for no more than 30 minutes. Pat them dry with paper towels. If desired, remove the thin membrane from the back of each rack for more tender results. Cut each rack into 2- to 3-rib sections so they fit snugly in the slow cooker.
- Scatter the smashed garlic cloves and fresh rosemary sprigs evenly over the bottom of the slow cooker insert. Place the rib sections on top, meaty side up, overlapping slightly if needed. The garlic and rosemary will infuse the ribs as they cook.
- Pour the maple bourbon BBQ sauce generously over the ribs, using a spoon or spatula to spread it evenly so every surface is coated. The sauce will thin out during cooking and create a rich glaze.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 6 to 7 hours, or on high for 3 to 4 hours, until the meat is tender and easily pulls away from the bone. Avoid opening the lid during cooking to keep the heat steady. The ribs are done when an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part reads at least 145°F (63°C), but for fall-off-the-bone texture, cook until the meat shreds easily. Let it rest for 3 minutes before slicing.
- Once the ribs are cooked, turn off the slow cooker and let the ribs rest in the sauce for 10 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute and the meat to become even more tender.
- If you prefer a thicker glaze, carefully transfer the sauce from the slow cooker to a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until reduced and slightly thickened. Alternatively, leave the sauce as is for a thinner, more spoonable consistency.
- Using tongs or a carving fork, carefully lift the rib sections out of the slow cooker and place them on a serving platter or individual plates. Spoon the thickened sauce over the top. Serve hot, with extra sauce on the side if desired.
