Tips for success
For the best texture, serve the stuffed baguette immediately after baking. The contrast between the crunchy crust and the molten cheese is at its peak right out of the oven.
If you need to hold it for a bit, keep it warm in a low oven, but expect the crust to soften slightly. Use a serrated knife and a gentle sawing motion to slice through the crispy bread without crushing the filling.
You can customize the filling with your favorite additions, such as sliced bell peppers or a sprinkle of black pepper. For a spicier kick, add a few dashes of hot sauce to the steak mixture.
If you have leftover filling, it is delicious on its own or over rice. The recipe is forgiving, so feel free to adjust the cheese quantities to your liking—just keep the total amount enough to generously cover the top.
Variations
- Pepper and Onion: Add 1 thinly sliced bell pepper along with the onion for extra sweetness and color. Sauté the pepper with the onion until tender, then proceed as directed.
- Spicy Kick: Stir 1 teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes or a few dashes of hot sauce into the steak mixture before stuffing. This adds a pleasant heat that pairs well with the cheese.
- Mushroom Lover's: Increase the mushrooms to 300 g and use a mix of white and cremini for a deeper earthy flavor. Sauté them until well browned before adding the steak.
- Garlic Herb Crust: Mix 1 tablespoon of chopped fresh parsley or chives into the garlic butter before brushing. This adds a fresh herbal note that brightens the rich filling.

Leftover stuffed baguette can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
To reheat, place slices on a baking sheet and warm in a 350°F (175°C) oven for about 10 minutes, until the cheese is melted and the bread is crisp again. Avoid microwaving, as it will make the bread soggy.
The steak filling can be cooked up to 2 days ahead and refrigerated. Reheat it gently in a skillet before stuffing the baguette. The baguette can be hollowed a few hours in advance and kept at room temperature, covered with a clean towel. Assemble the stuffed loaf just before baking for the best texture.
Serving ideas
Slice the baked baguette into thick rounds and serve hot as a main dish. Each round is a complete meal with bread, meat, and cheese. For a party, arrange the slices on a platter and let guests grab them by hand. The crunchy crust and gooey center make them irresistible finger food.
Pair the stuffed baguette with a simple green salad or roasted vegetables to balance the richness. It also works well with a side of pickles or a tangy slaw.
For a casual dinner, serve the whole loaf on a cutting board and let everyone slice their own portion. Leftovers are excellent the next day, though the crust will lose some crunch.

Loaded Philly Cheesesteak Stuffed French Baguette

Ingredients
- 1 large French baguette
- 450 g thinly shaved ribeye steak
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 200 g white mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 8 slices aged provolone cheese
- 150 g warm melted cheddar cheese sauce
- garlic butter, for brushing, to taste
Instructions
- Cut the top off the baguette lengthwise to create a long opening. Use your fingers or a small spoon to gently pull out the soft crumb, leaving a 1/2-inch shell of bread. Reserve the removed bread for another use, or discard it. Place the hollowed baguette on a baking sheet.
- Heat a large skillet over high heat and add the butter. Once melted and foaming, add the shaved ribeye in a single layer. Sear without stirring for 1 minute to get a good crust, then add the sliced onion and mushrooms. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are translucent and the mushrooms have released their liquid and started to brown, about 5 minutes. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and cook for 1 more minute. Let it rest for 3 minutes before slicing.
- Remove the skillet from the heat and let the steak mixture cool for about 5 minutes. This makes it easier to handle and prevents the bread from becoming soggy when stuffed. The filling should still be warm but not steaming hot.
- Lay 4 slices of provolone inside the hollowed baguette, covering the bottom and sides. Press them gently against the bread so they stick slightly. The cheese will melt and create a barrier that keeps the bread crisp.
- Spoon the warm steak, onion, and mushroom mixture into the baguette, packing it firmly but not overstuffing. Use the back of a spoon to press the filling down so there are no air pockets. The filling should come level with the top of the bread.
- Drizzle the warm melted cheddar cheese sauce evenly over the steak filling. Use a spoon to spread it into every crevice. The sauce will seep into the meat and add extra creaminess.
- Lay the remaining 4 slices of provolone over the top of the filling, overlapping slightly. This top layer will melt and bubble in the oven, creating a golden, blistered crust.
- Brush the exposed crust of the baguette generously with garlic butter. Make sure to coat the sides and any bare spots. This will give the bread a rich, savory flavor and help it turn deeply golden in the oven.
- Place the stuffed baguette on the baking sheet and bake at 400°F (200°C) for 12 minutes, until the crust is crunchy and deep golden brown and the cheese on top is bubbling and starting to brown in spots. The filling should be hot all the way through. Let it rest for 3 minutes before slicing.
- Remove the baguette from the oven and let it rest on the baking sheet for at least 3 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute and the cheese to set slightly, making it easier to slice into clean rounds without the filling oozing out.
- Using a serrated knife, slice the baguette crosswise into thick rounds, about 1 1/2 inches thick. Serve hot, with the cheese still molten. The crust should crunch audibly as you bite through.
