Tips for success

For the best texture, use jumbo or extra-jumbo shrimp (16–20 or 13–15 count). Smaller shrimp may overcook in the same time. If you can only find smaller shrimp, reduce the cooking time by 30 minutes.

Also, be gentle when stirring the seafood at the end — you want to keep the crab clusters intact for a beautiful presentation.

The butter sauce is delicious spooned over steamed rice or crusty bread. If you have leftovers, save the sauce to toss with pasta or use as a dip for seafood.

To make the dish spicier, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce along with the wine. Fresh herbs like parsley or chives make a nice garnish just before serving.

Variations

  • Spicy Cajun Twist: Add 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning and a few dashes of hot sauce along with the wine. Replace the parsley butter with a Cajun-spiced butter for an extra kick.
  • Add Sausage: Include 1 pound sliced andouille or smoked sausage with the seafood for a heartier meal. The sausage adds smoky flavor and makes the dish more filling.
  • Use Mussels or Clams: Swap half the shrimp for cleaned mussels or clams. Add them during the last hour of cooking so they steam open without becoming tough.
  • Dairy-Free Option: Use a dairy-free butter substitute and skip the scampi butter. Add extra garlic and a splash of lemon juice to brighten the sauce.

Storage and make-ahead

Fridge
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or microwave until hot.
Freezer
Not recommended — seafood texture suffers when frozen and reheated.
Reheat
Reheat in a covered skillet over medium-low heat with a splash of water or broth, or microwave in 30-second intervals until hot.

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The seafood can be reheated gently in a skillet with a little butter or in the microwave. The sauce may solidify when chilled, but it will melt again when reheated.

You can assemble the ingredients in the slow cooker insert the night before, cover, and refrigerate. In the morning, place the insert in the slow cooker base and cook as directed. Add 30 minutes to the cooking time if starting from cold.

Serving ideas

Serve the seafood boil directly from the slow cooker or transfer to a large platter for a family-style meal. Provide small bowls for the discarded shells and plenty of napkins.

A side of steamed jasmine rice soaks up the buttery sauce beautifully, and lemon wedges add a bright, citrusy contrast.

For a complete coastal feast, pair this with a crisp green salad or crusty bread for dipping. If you're serving a crowd, set out additional melted butter and extra lemon wedges.

The dish is hearty on its own, but the rice makes it a filling dinner that satisfies even the biggest appetites.

Frequently asked questions

Can this recipe be made with frozen shrimp?
Yes, but thaw the shrimp in the refrigerator overnight or under cold running water before adding them to the slow cooker. Frozen shrimp will lower the temperature of the pot and may extend the cooking time. For best results, use fully thawed shrimp.
How do you know when the seafood is done?
The shrimp should be pink and opaque, and the internal temperature should reach 145°F (63°C). The crab is already cooked, so it just needs to be heated through. If you're unsure, use an instant-read thermometer to check the thickest part of the shrimp.
Can you cook this on high instead of low?
Yes, you can cook on high for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, but watch closely to avoid overcooking the shrimp. Low heat is gentler and more forgiving, so it's recommended for the best texture.
What can you substitute for white wine?
Use seafood stock, chicken broth, or even water with a squeeze of lemon juice. The wine adds acidity, so a splash of vinegar or lemon juice can help mimic that brightness.
Can you use frozen corn instead of fresh?
Yes, frozen corn works perfectly and is what the video uses. It thaws during cooking and absorbs the butter sauce beautifully. Fresh corn cut from the cob is also a great option — just add it raw.

Prep 10 minCook 3 hTotal 3 h 10 minServes 6
Slow cooker filled with snow crab legs, shrimp, corn, and garlic in a golden butter sauce

Ingredients

  • 2 lb snow crab leg clusters
  • 2 lb raw jumbo shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 cups frozen sweet corn kernels
  • 12 cloves garlic, smashed
  • 6 tbsp parsley-garlic scampi butter
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine

Instructions

  1. Place the snow crab leg clusters and raw jumbo shrimp in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker insert. Arrange them in an even layer so they cook evenly.
  2. Scatter the frozen sweet corn kernels and smashed garlic cloves over the seafood. Spread them evenly so they nestle between the crab and shrimp.
  3. Place the pats of parsley-garlic scampi butter on top of the seafood and corn. Pour the white wine evenly over everything.
  4. Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 3 hours, until the shrimp are pink and opaque and the crab is heated through.
  5. Use an instant-read thermometer to check that the thickest part of the shrimp reaches 145°F (63°C). The crab should also be hot throughout.
  6. Using a slotted spoon, lift the seafood, corn, and garlic out of the butter sauce and onto a serving platter or individual plates. Serve with steamed rice and lemon wedges.
