Tips for success
For a more intense flavor, consider adding a thin layer of Dijon mustard to the inside of the rolls before adding the ham. This provides a sharp, acidic contrast to the rich pimento cheese and sweet rolls.
Another tip is to lightly toast the roll bottoms in the baking dish for two minutes before assembling; this creates a barrier that helps keep the bottom of the sliders firm and prevents them from becoming overly soft during the baking process.
When serving a larger crowd, these sliders can be easily doubled or tripled, provided you have enough baking dishes. It is better to use multiple smaller dishes rather than one overly large one to ensure even cooking.
Always serve them immediately while the cheese is still warm and gooey. If you find the tops are darkening too fast, a quick tent of aluminum foil will protect the sugar from burning while allowing the center to continue warming through.
Variations
- Spicy Pimento Slider Bake: Add a teaspoon of finely diced pickled jalapeños into the pimento cheese mixture before spreading it onto the rolls. This adds a nice kick of heat that cuts through the richness of the cheese and the sweetness of the butter glaze.
- Herb-Infused Slider Bake: Mix a teaspoon of dried Italian herbs or freshly chopped chives into the melted butter and brown sugar glaze. The herbs add a fresh, aromatic note that elevates the sliders and provides a beautiful contrast to the smoky paprika.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Freezer
- Not recommended, as the texture of the rolls and the consistency of the pimento cheese will suffer upon thawing.
- Reheat
- Reheat in a preheated oven at 300°F (150°C) until warmed through, about 10 minutes, or in a microwave for 30 seconds.
If you have leftovers, allow them to cool completely at room temperature, but do not leave them out for longer than two hours. Once cooled, store the sliders in an airtight container to keep them from drying out. They can be kept in the refrigerator for up to three days. For the best quality, avoid storing them with too much moisture or condensation, as this can affect the texture of the bread and the glaze over time.
These sliders are excellent for making ahead. Assemble them fully up to the point of adding the glaze, cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for up to four hours before baking. When ready to serve, pour the butter-sugar glaze over the tops, sprinkle with the paprika, and bake as directed. This makes them a perfect solution for stress-free hosting, allowing you to focus on other tasks while the oven does the work.
Serving ideas
Serve these sliders warm, directly from the baking dish, to ensure the cheese remains melted and the rolls stay soft. They are best enjoyed as a finger food, making them perfect for casual parties where guests can easily grab one or two at a time.
A spatula is essential for serving, as it helps lift each slider cleanly from the dish, keeping the layers of ham and cheese intact for a neat, attractive presentation on the serving platter.
Pair these sliders with a crisp, acidic side dish like a light green salad or pickled vegetables to balance the richness of the pimento cheese and the sweetness of the glaze.
Providing a few napkins is a good idea, as they are best enjoyed while warm and can be slightly messy. For a complete appetizer spread, they work well alongside fresh fruit or crunchy crudités, providing a nice contrast in texture and temperature to the warm, savory sliders.
