Tips for success
For an extra layer of flavor, zest the lemon before squeezing it. Stirring half a teaspoon of fresh lemon zest into the cream sauce right at the end of cooking intensifies the bright citrus aroma without adding extra liquid or acidity.
Additionally, make sure the heavy cream is at room temperature before adding it to the skillet. Cold cream straight from the refrigerator is more likely to curdle when it contacts the hot, acidic lemon juice in the pan.
To achieve the ultimate crispy texture on the roasted potatoes, soak the diced potatoes in cold water for 15 minutes to remove excess surface starch, then pat them completely dry with a clean kitchen towel before roasting. Removing the excess starch allows the edges to crisp up beautifully in the oven. Ensure the oven is fully preheated to 400°F (204°C) before sliding the baking sheet inside.
Variations
- Tuscan Style: Add sundried tomatoes and fresh baby spinach to the garlic cream sauce during the final minutes of simmering for a Mediterranean twist.
- Herb Infused: Stir in chopped fresh rosemary, thyme, or tarragon along with the garlic to infuse the cream sauce with earthy, aromatic herbal notes.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store leftovers in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Allow to cool for no more than 2 hours before refrigerating.
- Freezer
- Freezing is not recommended for this dish, as the cream sauce will split upon thawing and the potatoes and broccoli will lose their texture.
- Reheat
- Reheat the chicken and sauce gently in a skillet over low heat, adding a splash of milk to loosen. Reheat potatoes in a 350°F (177°C) oven until crispy.
Store any leftover chicken, potatoes, broccoli, and rice in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator. Keeping the components separate prevents the crispy potatoes from absorbing moisture from the broccoli and sauce, preserving their texture as much as possible.
Consume the leftovers within 3 days. When storing, allow the food to cool to room temperature for no more than 2 hours before sealing and placing it in the refrigerator to prevent bacterial growth.
While this meal is best enjoyed fresh, parts of it can be prepared ahead of time to save precious minutes on busy nights. The potatoes can be diced and stored in a bowl of cold water in the refrigerator up to 24 hours in advance to prevent browning. The broccoli can be chopped into florets and stored in a zip-top bag. You can also cook the rice a day ahead and simply reheat it when ready to assemble the plates.
Serving ideas
To serve this dish beautifully, start by creating a bed of warm, fluffy rice on one side of a wide, shallow bowl or plate. Arrange a generous portion of the crispy roasted potatoes and steamed broccoli florets next to the rice, leaving a dedicated space for the chicken.
Slice the warm, rested chicken breast on a bias into thick, elegant strips and fan them out over the center of the plate, partially overlapping the rice.
Generously spoon the warm garlic lemon cream sauce directly over the sliced chicken, letting it pool slightly around the rice and potatoes. The rice will absorb the savory cream sauce beautifully, while the potatoes retain their crunch.
Garnish the plate with a fresh lemon wheel or a sprinkle of finely chopped fresh parsley for a touch of color. Serve immediately while all components are hot and the sauce is perfectly emulsified.

Garlic Lemon Cream Chicken Plate with Crispy Potatoes

Ingredients
- 2 large boneless skinless chicken breasts
- 3 tbsp butter, divided
- 2 medium potatoes, diced
- 1 head broccoli, cut into florets
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 3 cups cooked rice, warm for serving
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C). Spread the diced potatoes onto a baking sheet in a single layer, ensuring they are not crowded. Roast in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, tossing halfway through, until they are golden brown and crispy on the edges. Remove them from the oven and set aside in a warm place until ready to assemble the plates.
- Fill a medium pot with one inch of water and bring it to a boil over high heat. Place a steamer basket inside the pot, add the broccoli florets, and cover tightly with a lid. Steam for 5 to 6 minutes, or until the broccoli is tender-crisp and bright green. Remove the basket from the heat immediately to stop the cooking process.
- Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken breasts to the hot skillet. Cook for 6 to 8 minutes per side, turning once, until a golden-brown crust forms and the thickest part of the meat registers 165°F (74°C) on a meat thermometer. Transfer the cooked chicken to a clean plate, tent loosely with foil, and let it rest for 5 minutes.
- Reduce the skillet heat to medium. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter and the minced garlic to the pan, stirring constantly for 1 minute until fragrant. Pour in the fresh lemon juice, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Whisk in the heavy cream and simmer for 2 to 3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly. Return the sliced chicken and any accumulated juices to the pan to coat.
- Divide the warm cooked rice, roasted crispy potatoes, and steamed broccoli among the serving plates. Slice the rested chicken breast crosswise into thick strips and arrange them neatly next to the sides. Generously spoon the hot garlic lemon cream sauce over the chicken slices, allowing it to cascade over the sides and onto the plate. Serve immediately while hot.
