Before you start

Before beginning, ensure your slow cooker is clean and positioned on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Have all your ingredients measured and ready.

If your ground turkey was frozen, it must be completely thawed in the refrigerator overnight; never attempt to cook frozen meat in a slow cooker, as it will stay in the temperature danger zone for too long, allowing bacteria to multiply.

Ingredients at a glance (5)
  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1 cup dry red lentils
  • 2 tbsp chili seasoning
  • 28 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 2 cups chicken broth

Instructions

Layering the Base

  1. Prepare the Base
Place the raw ground turkey into the bottom of the slow cooker, breaking it up slightly into smaller crumbles with a spoon to ensure even cooking throughout the process.
Look for The turkey should be spread out across the bottom of the crock.
Tip Ensure the turkey is thawed completely before adding it to the slow cooker for safe and even cooking.

At this phase, the turkey should be spread evenly across the bottom of the crock. It is important that the meat is not packed too tightly so that the heat can penetrate through the entire mass during the cooking process. Check that your slow cooker is plugged in and ready to go.

Combining Ingredients

  1. Add Remaining Ingredients
Scatter the dry red lentils over the turkey. Sprinkle the chili seasoning evenly across the top, then pour the crushed tomatoes and the chicken broth over the entire mixture.
Look for All ingredients should be combined in the crock.
Tip Adding the liquid last helps distribute the seasoning throughout the dish as it settles.

At this stage, you should see the lentils, seasoning, and liquids layered over the turkey. Ensure that the tomatoes and broth have thoroughly covered the lentils, as they need to be submerged to soften properly. Check that the seasoning is evenly distributed across the surface before covering the pot.

Final Cooking

  1. Cook and Serve
Cover and cook on low for 4 to 6 hours or high for 2 to 3 hours. Ensure the ground turkey reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) before serving.
Look for The chili should be thick, and the lentils should be soft and tender.
Safe temperature 165°F (74°C) internal temperature (poultry)
Tip Stir the chili well before serving to combine the textures.

The chili is ready when it is thick, fragrant, and bubbling. The lentils should have fully incorporated into the sauce, and the turkey should be cooked through.

Before serving, give the chili a thorough stir to ensure all the ingredients are well-combined and the temperature is uniform throughout the pot.

Common mistakes

A common mistake is failing to break up the ground turkey before cooking, which can result in large, uneven clumps of meat. Another error is overstuffing the slow cooker, which prevents even heat distribution.

Ensure you use a slow cooker that is appropriately sized for the volume of ingredients. Finally, resist the urge to open the lid frequently, as each time you do, heat escapes and significantly increases the total cooking time.

How to tell it’s done

The chili is done when the ground turkey is fully cooked, showing no pink, and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) on a digital meat thermometer.

The lentils should be soft and tender, having absorbed most of the broth. If the consistency is too thick for your preference, you can stir in an additional splash of broth or water before serving.

  • Poultry: 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part
  • Ground meat: 160°F (71°C) in the thickest part
