Tips for success

For an even richer flavor, sprinkle a little extra parmesan cheese on top of each layer during the assembly process. This builds depth in the sauce and adds a subtle saltiness that balances the sweetness of the marinara.

If you prefer a lighter touch, you can also add a layer of fresh spinach leaves between the ravioli and the sauce, which will wilt beautifully as the dish cooks without overpowering the other ingredients.

When serving, use a large, flat spatula to scoop from the bottom of the slow cooker to ensure you get a full cross-section of the layers. If you are planning to serve this for a larger gathering, you can easily double the recipe, provided your slow cooker is large enough to accommodate the extra volume.

Simply ensure that the cooking time is monitored closely, as a larger volume may require more time to reach the same level of tenderness.

Variations

  • Vegetarian Ravioli Lasagna: Add a layer of sautéed mushrooms, diced zucchini, and bell peppers between the ravioli and sauce for a hearty, veggie-packed version.
  • Creamy Alfredo Twist: Substitute the marinara sauce with a high-quality alfredo sauce for a creamy, decadent variation that pairs perfectly with the cheese ravioli.

Storage and make-ahead

Fridge
Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Allow to cool for 2 hours before refrigerating.
Freezer
Store in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.
Reheat
Reheat in a microwave-safe dish or on the stovetop over low heat until steaming hot throughout, adding a splash of water if needed.

If you have leftovers, allow the lasagna to cool at room temperature for no more than 2 hours before transferring it into an airtight container. Properly stored, it will maintain its quality in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. When ready to enjoy again, you can reheat portions in the microwave or in a small pan on the stovetop, adding a tablespoon of water if the sauce has thickened too much during storage.

It is best to layer the ravioli and cheese in the slow cooker just before you are ready to start the cooking process. If you assemble everything too far in advance, the pasta may absorb too much moisture from the sauce and become overly soft or mushy before it even begins to cook. Keep your ingredients chilled until the moment you are ready to assemble and start the slow cooker.

Serving ideas

Serve this lasagna directly from the slow cooker for a casual, comforting presentation that keeps the meal warm throughout the dinner. A simple side salad with a bright vinaigrette is the perfect accompaniment, as the acidity of the greens cuts through the richness of the cheese and sauce.

To elevate the presentation, garnish each serving with freshly chopped parsley or basil leaves, which add a touch of vibrant color and a fresh, herbal note.

For a complete meal, consider serving the lasagna with a side of toasted garlic bread, which is excellent for soaking up any remaining sauce on the plate.

If you have guests, set out a bowl of extra grated parmesan and red pepper flakes on the table, allowing everyone to customize the saltiness to their preference. The combination of the warm, cheesy pasta and a crisp, cold salad creates a balanced and satisfying dining experience.

Frequently asked questions

Can this be made with frozen ravioli?
It is not recommended to use frozen ravioli as they contain more water and may become mushy during the long cook time. For the best texture, always use fresh, refrigerated ravioli as they are designed to cook perfectly in this type of sauce-based environment.
Why does the lasagna need to rest?
Resting for 10 minutes allows the sauce and melted cheese to stabilize. If you serve it immediately, the layers may slide apart, and the sauce will be too thin. Letting it rest ensures a cleaner scoop and a better presentation.
Can this be made in a smaller slow cooker?
Yes, you can use a smaller slow cooker, but ensure you adjust the amount of ingredients accordingly so that the cooker is not overfilled. Overfilling can prevent the top layer from cooking properly and lead to messy spills during the cooking cycle.
