Before you start

Before starting, ensure your slow cooker is clean and positioned on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Have all your measured ingredients ready to go, as the assembly process is very quick.

If using frozen meatballs, keep them in the freezer until the very last second to maintain their structure before they enter the crock. Verify that your thermometer is calibrated and ready to check the final temperature once the cook time concludes.

Ingredients at a glance (5)
  • 20 count frozen precooked turkey meatballs
  • 1 cup diced raw onion
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp dry mustard
  • 1 cup ketchup

Instructions

Assembly Phase

  1. Assemble the base
Place the frozen precooked turkey meatballs into the bottom of the slow cooker, ensuring they are spread out in an even layer to promote consistent cooking throughout the process.
Look for The meatballs should cover the bottom of the crock.
Tip Use a medium-sized slow cooker for the best results.

The meatballs are arranged in a single layer at the bottom of the slow cooker. Everything is ready to be seasoned and covered with the glaze ingredients before the slow cooking begins.

Seasoning Phase

  1. Add aromatics and seasonings
Scatter the diced raw onion over the meatballs. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and dry mustard, then sprinkle this mixture evenly over the onions and meatballs.
Look for Ensure the sugar and mustard are distributed well.
Tip Do not skip the mustard as it adds a necessary tang.

The onions, brown sugar, and dry mustard are distributed over the meatballs. The dish is now ready for the final addition of the ketchup glaze before the lid is secured for cooking.

Cooking Phase

  1. Glaze and cook
Spoon the ketchup over the top of the mixture. Cover and cook on low for 3 hours until the meatballs reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) and the onions are soft.
Look for The sauce should be thick and bubbling.
Safe temperature 160°F (71°C) internal temperature (ground meat)
Tip Check the temperature with a meat thermometer.

The meatballs have cooked through, the sauce has reduced to a thick, flavorful coating, and the onions are tender. The dish is ready to be served hot directly from the slow cooker.

Common mistakes

Avoid lifting the slow cooker lid frequently during the cooking process, as this releases heat and moisture, which can significantly increase the total cooking time and cause uneven results.

Do not add extra water or broth to the crock; the natural moisture from the meatballs and the ketchup is sufficient to create the perfect sauce consistency.

Finally, ensure the brown sugar is spread evenly to prevent burnt spots at the bottom of the slow cooker.

How to tell it’s done

The meatballs are finished when they are heated through and reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C). At this point, the sauce should have thickened into a glossy, sweet, and tangy glaze that coats the meatballs.

The onions should be soft and translucent, having fully incorporated into the sauce. Always verify the temperature by inserting a meat thermometer into the center of the largest meatball to ensure it is safe to serve.

  • Ground meat: 160°F (71°C) in the thickest part
