Before you start

Before starting, ensure the slow cooker insert is clean and dry. Prepare the pecans by chopping them into uniform, bite-sized pieces to ensure even distribution.

Have all ingredients measured and ready, including melting the butter in a microwave-safe container until it is liquid but not boiling. Clear a workspace near the slow cooker to allow for easy assembly of the layers without needing to transport the heavy insert after it is filled.

Ingredients at a glance (5)
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup shredded coconut
  • 1 cup pecans, chopped
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix
  • 3/4 cup butter, melted

Instructions

Layering the ingredients

  1. Layering the base
Pour the sweetened condensed milk into the bottom of the slow cooker, spreading it evenly to create a base layer.
Look for The milk should cover the bottom of the insert.
Tip Grease the slow cooker with non-stick spray beforehand for easier cleanup.

The sweetened condensed milk should form a smooth, even base covering the bottom of the slow cooker. Ensure the edges are clear of any spills to prevent burning during the long cook time.

Adding the dry layers

  1. Adding toppings and cake
Scatter the shredded coconut and chopped pecans over the condensed milk. Evenly sprinkle the dry chocolate cake mix over the nuts and coconut, ensuring full coverage.
Look for The cake mix should completely cover the coconut and pecans.
Tip Do not stir the ingredients, as the layering is essential for the dump cake texture.

The coconut, pecans, and cake mix should be distributed in uniform layers. Check that there are no large clumps of dry cake mix, as these will not cook properly without enough moisture.

Final cooking and resting

  1. Adding butter and cooking
Drizzle the melted butter over the top of the cake mix layer. Cover and cook on high for 2 to 3 hours until the cake is set, then let it rest for 15 minutes before serving.
Look for The edges should be firm and the center should be cooked through.
Tip Check the cake halfway through to ensure it is not bubbling over.

The butter should be drizzled across the entire top surface.

After cooking, the cake should look dark, rich, and slightly bubbling at the edges, indicating the sugars have caramelized and the cake is fully set throughout the center for a perfect, warm, and decadent dessert experience.

Common mistakes

A common error is stirring the ingredients together. This ruins the 'dump' effect and can lead to a dense, gummy texture rather than the intended light, cake-like consistency.

Additionally, failing to cover the entire surface with butter can leave patches of dry, powdery cake mix on top. Ensure the butter is drizzled slowly and evenly across the entire surface to avoid any dry spots, which can be unappealing in the final dish.

How to tell it’s done

The cake is done when the edges are firm and have pulled slightly away from the sides of the slow cooker. The center should appear set and no longer liquid, though it will naturally remain moist due to the condensed milk.

A toothpick inserted into the center should come out with a few moist crumbs rather than wet batter. Allow the cake to rest for at least 15 minutes to let the structure firm up before portioning.

Coming up in Part 3: common questions

  • Can this be made in a smaller slow cooker?
  • Why is the cake mix still powdery on top?
  • Is it necessary to grease the slow cooker?
