Before you start

Before beginning, ensure all ingredients are properly measured and prepared. Trim the ends of the green beans and cut them into two-inch pieces. Mince the garlic cloves finely to ensure the flavor permeates the sauce.

Have your slow cooker clean and ready on a level, heat-safe surface. If you are using a slow cooker liner for easier cleanup, insert it now before adding any ingredients to the ceramic bowl.

Ingredients at a glance (5)
  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1 lb green beans, trimmed and cut
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce

Instructions

Preparation and Layering

  1. Prepare the Base
Place the ground turkey into the bottom of the slow cooker, breaking it apart with a spoon into small, even crumbles to ensure it cooks through evenly.
Look for Turkey should be spread across the bottom of the slow cooker insert without large clumps.
Tip Ensure the turkey is well-distributed to allow the heat to circulate effectively during the cooking process.

At the end of this phase, the ground turkey is distributed evenly, and the green beans and garlic are layered on top. The slow cooker insert should be prepared and ready for the sauce.

Ensure the turkey is broken into small, uniform pieces to facilitate even heat distribution and prevent large, undercooked clumps from forming during the long cook time.

Sauce Integration

  1. Add Aromatics and Vegetables
Scatter the cut green beans over the crumbled turkey. Add the minced garlic evenly across the top of the beans and turkey mixture.
Look for Vegetables should be layered uniformly over the meat to encourage even steaming.
Tip Fresh green beans work best here for a slight crunch, but frozen beans may be used if thawed first.

The honey and soy sauce mixture is poured over the ingredients, beginning the infusion process. The sauce should be distributed evenly to ensure all components are lightly coated. At this point, the slow cooker is covered, and the environment is sealed to allow the flavors to meld and the ingredients to begin their gentle, consistent cooking cycle.

Slow Cooking

  1. Sauce and Cook
Whisk the honey and soy sauce together in a small bowl until fully combined. Pour the sauce over the ingredients in the slow cooker. Cover and cook on low for 4 hours until the turkey reaches 165°F (74°C).
Look for The sauce will thicken and coat the meat and beans as the turkey reaches the safe internal temperature.
Safe temperature 165°F (74°C) internal temperature (poultry)
Tip Avoid lifting the lid frequently to ensure the slow cooker maintains a constant temperature throughout the cooking cycle.

After four hours on low, the turkey is fully cooked, and the flavors are fully developed. The sauce will have reduced slightly into a thick, pourable glaze that clings to the turkey and green beans. The dish should smell fragrant and savory, with the garlic and honey notes clearly present throughout the kitchen as the final cooking stage completes.

Common mistakes

Avoid overcooking the green beans, as they can become mushy if left in the slow cooker for too long. If you prefer a crunchier texture, add the green beans during the final hour of the cooking cycle instead of at the beginning.

Additionally, do not skip the step of breaking the turkey into small crumbles, as large chunks may cook unevenly and result in an unappealing texture for the final dish.

How to tell it’s done

The dish is considered done when the ground turkey has reached an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). At this stage, the turkey should be fully browned throughout with no pink remaining, and the green beans should be tender-crisp.

The honey garlic sauce will have thickened slightly and appear glossy, coating the ingredients evenly. Use a digital meat thermometer to verify the temperature in the thickest part of the meat mixture.

  • Poultry: 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part
