Tips for success
To achieve an extra-crispy exterior, lightly brush the tops of the croissants with a small amount of melted butter before placing them in the oven.
This creates a beautiful sheen and enhances the buttery flavor of the pastry. If you prefer a more intense flavor, add a pinch of dried herbs like thyme or oregano on top of the cheese before closing the sandwich.
If the croissants are slightly stale, a quick spritz of water before baking can help revive them. The steam created in the oven will rehydrate the dough, making it feel fresh and light once more.
Always let the sandwiches sit for one minute after removing them from the oven to allow the cheese to set slightly, making them easier to handle and eat without the filling sliding out.
Variations
- Turkey and Provolone: Swap the deli ham for thinly sliced turkey breast and replace the Swiss cheese with mild provolone. This creates a lighter flavor profile that works well for a midday meal.
- Savory Herb Twist: Add a teaspoon of finely chopped fresh chives or parsley to the honey mustard. This simple addition introduces a fresh, aromatic element that brightens the overall flavor of the sandwich.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
- Freezer
- Freezing is not recommended as it ruins the flaky texture of the pastry.
- Reheat
- Reheat in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 5 minutes until warmed through.
Allow any leftovers to cool completely at room temperature for no more than two hours before placing them in an airtight container. Keep the container in the refrigerator to maintain freshness.
While the texture is best when eaten immediately, storing them properly helps prevent the pastry from absorbing excess moisture and becoming soggy, allowing for a better result when reheated later.
You can assemble the sandwiches up to two hours before baking, provided they are kept in a cool area.
Do not apply the mustard until just before baking if you are preparing them more than an hour in advance, as the condiment can make the croissant bread too soft if it sits for a prolonged period. Keep them covered to prevent the pastry from drying out.
Serving ideas
Serve these sandwiches warm directly from the oven as a standalone breakfast or paired with a side of fresh fruit. The richness of the ham and cheese pairs wonderfully with the light, buttery nature of the croissant, making them an excellent choice for a quick morning meal or a casual weekend brunch.
Arrange the sandwiches on a wooden serving board to create an inviting presentation. They can be served whole or sliced diagonally for easier eating. If desired, offer additional honey mustard on the side for dipping, which adds an extra layer of flavor and moisture that complements the crisp edges of the golden-brown pastry.
