Before you start

Before beginning, ensure the oven is preheated to the correct temperature. Gather all ingredients and have your baking dish ready on a stable surface. Peel and core the apples, cutting them into uniform wedges to ensure they cook at the same rate.

Having the butter melted and the dry ingredients measured beforehand will make the assembly process smooth and efficient, allowing the dough to stay cool and easy to handle until the very moment it hits the oven.

Ingredients at a glance (6)
  • 2 large Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 8 wedges each
  • 1 can refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 12 oz lemon-lime soda

Instructions

Assembling the dumplings

  1. Prepare the apples and dough
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Peel, core, and slice each apple into 8 wedges. Separate the crescent roll dough into triangles. Place an apple wedge on the wide end of each dough triangle and roll it up tightly toward the point. Arrange the apple-filled rolls in a 9x13-inch baking dish in neat rows.
Look for The dough triangles are wrapped securely around the apple wedges and placed in the dish.
Tip Ensure the dough is sealed well around the apple so the filling stays inside while baking.

At the end of this phase, the apple wedges are tightly wrapped in crescent dough and arranged uniformly in the baking dish.

The rolls should look neat and be ready to receive the butter and soda mixture. Check that all apples are fully enclosed to prevent leaking during the baking process.

Adding the sauce

  1. Prepare the sauce
In a medium bowl, whisk together the melted butter, granulated sugar, and ground cinnamon until smooth. Pour this mixture evenly over the arranged apple dumplings in the baking dish, ensuring every roll is coated. Carefully pour the lemon-lime soda around the edges of the dish, being careful not to wash the cinnamon butter off the tops of the rolls.
Look for The butter mixture is poured over the rolls and the soda fills the bottom of the pan.
Tip Pour the soda slowly into the corners of the dish to avoid disturbing the rolls.

Once the butter, sugar, and cinnamon mixture is poured over the rolls, and the soda is added to the edges, the dish should look ready for the oven. Ensure the cinnamon butter is distributed evenly over the top of each roll to encourage a beautiful golden crust as they bake.

Baking to perfection

  1. Bake and serve
Place the baking dish into the preheated oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the crescent rolls are puffed and deep golden brown. The syrup in the bottom of the pan should be bubbling and thick. Remove from the oven and let the dumplings rest for 10 minutes before serving, allowing the syrup to thicken slightly.
Look for The rolls are golden brown and the syrup is bubbling vigorously.
Tip The resting time is crucial for the syrup to reach the right consistency for serving.

When the baking is complete, the dumplings will be golden brown, puffed, and sitting in a bubbling, syrupy sauce. The kitchen should smell strongly of cinnamon and baked apples. Verify that the dough is cooked through and the sauce has thickened before removing the dish from the oven.

Common mistakes

A common mistake is using apples that are too soft, which can lead to mushy dumplings. Stick to firm, crisp varieties. Another error is failing to seal the dough edges properly, which may cause the filling to leak out during baking.

Ensure the oven is fully preheated before placing the dish inside to ensure the dough rises and browns correctly. Avoid rushing the resting period, as the sauce needs time to thicken into a delicious syrup after leaving the oven.

How to tell it’s done

The dumplings are done when the crescent roll dough is puffed and deep golden brown. The syrup in the bottom of the dish should be thick, bubbling, and caramelized around the edges.

If you insert a small knife into the apple wedges, they should feel tender and yield easily. Allowing the dish to rest for at least 10 minutes after removing it from the oven is essential to let the sauce set to the perfect syrupy consistency for serving.
