Tips for success

To elevate the flavor profile of this casserole, try adding a pinch of smoked paprika or a dash of hot sauce to the creamy sauce before mixing. This subtle addition enhances the smoky notes of the ham and cuts through the richness of the cheese.

Additionally, ensure the potatoes are dried thoroughly with a clean kitchen towel after dicing if they were soaked in water; excess surface moisture on the potatoes can dilute the creamy sauce and prevent it from clinging properly.

For an extra crispy topping, mix a half cup of crushed butter crackers or panko breadcrumbs with a tablespoon of melted butter and sprinkle them over the cheese during the final fifteen minutes of baking.

This adds a delightful textural contrast to the creamy potatoes and tender ham. If the cheese is melting quickly but not browning to your liking, turn on the oven broiler for the last two minutes, watching closely to prevent burning.

Variations

  • Broccoli Cheddar Casserole: Fold in two cups of chopped fresh broccoli florets along with the potatoes and ham for a delicious vegetable addition.
  • Spicy Pepper Jack Casserole: Substitute the sharp cheddar cheese with pepper jack cheese and add diced jalapenos to the mixture for a spicy kick.

Storage and make-ahead

Fridge
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days.
Freezer
Freezing is not recommended as the dairy-based sauce may separate and become grainy when thawed.
Reheat
Reheat individual portions in the microwave, or cover the baking dish with foil and reheat in a 350°F (175°C) oven until hot.

Allow any leftover casserole to cool completely at room temperature for no more than two hours before storing. Transfer the leftovers to an airtight container, or cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Store the casserole in the refrigerator for up to three to four days. The flavors often develop and deepen overnight, making the leftovers taste even better the next day.

This casserole is an excellent candidate for make-ahead meal prep. Assemble the entire dish up to twenty-four hours in advance, wrapping the unbaked baking dish tightly with plastic wrap and storing it in the refrigerator.

When ready to bake, remove the dish from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about thirty minutes to take the chill off before placing it in the preheated oven. You may need to add five to ten minutes to the initial baking time.

Serving ideas

Serve this rich and comforting casserole alongside a light, crisp green salad dressed with a simple vinaigrette to balance the creamy, cheesy flavors. Roasted green beans, steamed broccoli, or a side of glazed carrots also make excellent vegetable pairings that complement the hearty potatoes and savory ham.

It makes a complete, satisfying dinner on its own, but pairs beautifully with warm, crusty bread to scoop up any remaining rich creamy sauce from the plate.

For a brunch presentation, serve this casserole alongside fresh fruit skewers and light mimosas. The hearty combination of potatoes, ham, and cheese fits perfectly into a morning menu. Garnish the top of the casserole with a sprinkle of finely chopped fresh chives or green onions just before serving to add a pop of bright color and a mild, onion-like freshness that cuts through the rich cheese and creamy sauce beautifully.

Frequently asked questions

Can frozen diced potatoes be used instead of fresh russet potatoes?
Yes, frozen diced hash browns can be used. Thaw them completely and pat them dry with paper towels before folding them into the creamy sauce to prevent excess moisture from watering down the casserole.
How can a watery casserole sauce be prevented?
Ensure the potatoes are dried thoroughly after peeling and dicing. Excess water on the surface of the potatoes will dilute the creamy sauce during the baking process, resulting in a runny consistency.
Can this casserole be frozen before baking?
It is not recommended to freeze this casserole unbaked, as dairy-based creamy sauces can separate and become grainy when thawed and baked.
