Before you start

Before beginning the cooking process, organize all ingredients and equipment to ensure a smooth workflow. Measure out the ground beef, cheese, and baking batter. Set up a colander over a bowl for draining the meat.

Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C) so it reaches the correct temperature by the time the pie is assembled. Grease the 9-inch pie dish thoroughly with cooking spray or butter to prevent sticking.

Ingredients at a glance (3)
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup baking batter, store-bought or made ahead

Instructions

Browning the Beef

  1. Brown the Ground Beef
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef. Cook the meat, breaking it apart with a spatula, until it is completely browned and no pink remains. Ensure the beef reaches an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) to guarantee safety. Remove the skillet from the heat and carefully drain all excess grease from the beef.
Look for The beef is fully browned and sizzling with no pink parts remaining.
Safe temperature 160°F (71°C) internal temperature (ground meat)
Tip Drain the beef thoroughly to prevent the crust from becoming soggy.

At the end of this phase, the ground beef should be completely browned with no remaining pink spots, sizzling gently in its rendered fat.

The kitchen will fill with a rich, savory aroma of seasoned meat. Before proceeding, ensure the beef is thoroughly drained of excess grease so the pie base remains firm and flavorful.

Assembly

  1. Layer Beef and Cheese
Transfer the drained ground beef into the bottom of a 9-inch pie dish, spreading it into an even layer. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese uniformly over the top of the beef, covering it completely from edge to edge.
Look for The cheese forms a uniform blanket over the beef layer.
Tip Shred the cheese from a block for the smoothest melt.
  2. Pour the Batter
Slowly and carefully pour the baking batter directly over the cheese and beef layers in the pie dish. The batter will naturally seep down into the crevices, forming a flat, even layer on top that completely covers the cheese.
Look for The batter forms a smooth, pale liquid layer covering the cheese entirely.
Tip Pour slowly around the edges first to ensure even distribution.

At the end of this phase, the pie dish is fully assembled with a neat layer of seasoned beef at the bottom, a vibrant layer of shredded cheddar cheese in the middle, and a smooth batter poured evenly over the top. The batter should cover the cheese completely, ready to rise in the oven.

Baking

  1. Bake until Golden
Place the pie dish into the preheated oven at 400°F (204°C). Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the top crust is puffed, dry, and deeply golden brown. Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
Look for The crust is puffed, golden-brown, and dry to the touch.
Tip Letting the pie rest makes it much easier to slice neatly.

At the end of this phase, the pie will have a beautiful, puffed, golden-brown crust with bubbling edges. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out clean, and the cheese underneath will be completely melted and hot. Let the pie rest briefly to allow the structure to set before slicing.

Common mistakes

One common mistake is failing to drain the browned ground beef adequately before layering it into the pie dish. Excess grease will rise during baking, resulting in a soggy, oily crust and a greasy filling.

Another frequent error is using a batter that is too thick, which prevents it from seeping down around the beef and cheese properly. Ensure the batter has a smooth, pourable consistency before adding it to the dish.

How to tell it’s done

To guarantee the pie is perfectly cooked and safe to eat, check that the internal temperature of the ground beef has reached 160°F (71°C) during the browning step.

The top crust must be dry to the touch, deeply golden brown, and slightly firm. Inserting a knife or toothpick into the center of the pie should reveal a fully set batter with no wet, liquid pockets remaining.

  • Ground meat: 160°F (71°C) in the thickest part
