Before you start

Before assembling, ensure all components are prepared and at the appropriate temperatures. The chocolate cake should be fully cooled if baked fresh, or thawed if using a store-bought version.

The whipped cream should be freshly whipped to stiff peaks to ensure it remains stable. Having the glass dish cleaned and ready on a level surface will make the assembly process much smoother and prevent any mishaps during the layering phase.

Ingredients at a glance (4)
  • 1 layer chocolate cake, store-bought or made ahead
  • 2 cups whipped cream
  • 15 cookies Oreo cookies, crushed
  • 1/2 cup chocolate ganache, store-bought or made ahead

Instructions

Cake Foundation

  1. Layering the base
Place the chocolate cake layer into the bottom of the glass dish, pressing down gently to ensure an even surface.
Look for The cake should fit snugly in the dish.
Tip Trim the cake edges if necessary to fit perfectly.

The cake base should be firmly pressed into the glass dish, covering the bottom entirely. Check that there are no large gaps between the cake and the walls of the dish before proceeding to the cream layer, ensuring a clean presentation.

Cream and Cookie Layers

  1. Adding cream and cookies
Spread the whipped cream over the cake layer. Sprinkle the crushed Oreo cookies evenly over the cream layer, pressing them lightly so they adhere.
Look for The cream should be spread to the edges.
Tip Use an offset spatula for a smooth cream layer.

The whipped cream should be spread in an even, smooth layer, providing a stable surface for the cookies. Once the crushed Oreos are sprinkled over, they should be evenly distributed to ensure every serving gets an equal amount of cookie crunch.

Ganache Finish

  1. Finishing with ganache
Pour the chocolate ganache over the top of the Oreo layer. Spread it gently to cover the surface completely. Chill the dish in the refrigerator for at least two hours before serving.
Look for The ganache should be glossy and set.
Tip Allow the ganache to cool to room temperature before pouring.

The ganache should cover the entire surface, creating a smooth, reflective layer. Once the dish is placed in the refrigerator, it should remain undisturbed until the ganache is fully set and the dessert is chilled throughout.

Common mistakes

Avoid spreading the ganache while it is still warm, as this will cause the whipped cream underneath to soften and lose its structure.

Another common error is failing to chill the dessert for the full duration, which prevents the layers from setting properly and makes serving messy.

Ensure that the Oreo pieces are not too fine, as this will result in a gritty texture rather than the desired satisfying crunch in each bite.

How to tell it’s done

The dessert is ready when the ganache is firm to the touch and the entire structure feels stable after the required chilling time. A spoon should glide easily through the layers without the cream or cake crumbling.

The final result should look uniform, with clear, distinct lines between the dark cake, white cream, and glossy chocolate top. There is no internal temperature to monitor, as this is a chilled, non-baked assembly.
