Tips for success
For the best texture, shred the pork while it's still warm—it pulls apart more easily and absorbs the sauce better.
If you prefer crispy edges, spread the shredded pork on a baking sheet and broil for a few minutes until the tips brown. This adds a nice contrast to the tender meat.
The pan jus is liquid gold—don't leave it behind. Spoon it over the pork when serving, or whisk it into mashed potatoes or polenta.
You can also reduce it in a saucepan to thicken it further. If you have leftovers, store them with the extra jus so the meat stays moist.
Variations
- Add Aromatics: For extra depth, add a sliced onion and a few cloves of garlic to the slow cooker along with the mushrooms. They'll melt into the sauce and enhance the savory flavor.
- Spicy Kick: Stir in a minced jalapeño or a teaspoon of red pepper flakes with the soup mix for a subtle heat that balances the richness of the butter.
- Herb Infusion: Add a few sprigs of fresh thyme or rosemary on top of the roast before cooking. Remove the stems before shredding.
- Dairy-Free Option: Replace the salted butter with 1/2 cup of olive oil or a plant-based butter substitute. The sauce will still be rich and flavorful.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Keep the pork submerged in its juices to maintain moisture.
- Freezer
- Freeze in portion-sized containers for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
- Reheat
- Reheat gently on the stovetop over medium-low heat, adding a splash of water or broth to restore the sauce.

Serving ideas
Serve the pork shoulder over a bed of creamy mashed potatoes, letting the buttery jus soak into the potatoes.
It's also excellent on soft rolls as a hearty sandwich, or alongside roasted vegetables and rice. The mushrooms are a delicious side on their own, so be sure to spoon them over each serving.
For a complete meal, add a simple green salad or steamed greens on the side. The richness of the pork pairs well with bright, acidic sides like pickles or a squeeze of lemon. Leftover pork can be used in tacos, quesadillas, or omelets the next day.

Crockpot Mushroom Butter Pork Shoulder: Dump-and-Go

Ingredients
- 4 lb boneless pork shoulder roast (Boston butt)
- 1 oz dry onion soup mix
- 8 oz cremini mushrooms, halved
- 1/2 cup salted butter (1 stick)
Instructions
- Place the 4-pound pork shoulder roast in the center of a 6-quart slow cooker insert. Sprinkle the dry onion soup mix evenly over the top of the roast. Scatter the halved cremini mushrooms around the sides of the roast, tucking them between the meat and the walls of the slow cooker.
- Place the stick of salted butter directly on top of the seasoned roast. It will melt and baste the meat as it cooks, creating a rich, golden pan jus.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 8 to 10 hours, or on HIGH for 5 to 6 hours, until the pork is fork-tender and easily shreds. The mushrooms will soften and the butter will emulsify with the meat juices into a glossy sauce. Let it rest for 3 minutes before slicing.
- Once the pork reaches an internal temperature of at least 145°F (63°C), turn off the slow cooker and let the roast rest in the warm liquid for at least 3 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute and makes shredding easier.
- Remove the roast to a cutting board and shred it with two forks, discarding any large pieces of fat. Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker and toss it with the mushrooms and buttery jus so every strand is coated.
- Serve the pork shoulder over mashed potatoes or on its own, spooning extra mushrooms and pan jus over the top. The meat should be steaming and glossy, with the savory butter sauce soaking into whatever it touches.
