Before you start

Before starting, ensure the slow cooker is placed on a heat-resistant surface and that the ceramic insert is clean and dry. Have your ingredients measured and ready to go.

Because the recipe uses frozen meatballs, there is no need to thaw them beforehand, which significantly reduces the preparation time. Simply clear a small space on your counter, gather your measuring tools, and you are ready to assemble the dish in just a few minutes.

Ingredients at a glance (5)
  • 24 count frozen precooked turkey meatballs
  • 1 cup diced red bell pepper
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 cup hot sauce
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

Instructions

Assembly phase

  1. Combine ingredients
Place the frozen precooked turkey meatballs into the slow cooker basin. Scatter the diced red bell peppers over the meatballs, then sprinkle the red pepper flakes evenly over the top.
Look for Ensure the meatballs are spread out evenly in the base of the slow cooker for consistent heating.
Tip Using a slow cooker liner makes cleanup significantly faster after the sauce thickens during cooking.

At this stage, the slow cooker contains the frozen meatballs, peppers, and spices. The ingredients are neatly arranged, and everything is ready for the sauce to be poured over the top. Check that the meatballs are distributed evenly to ensure even heating across the entire batch.

Sauce infusion phase

  1. Prepare and add sauce
In a small glass measuring cup, whisk together the hot sauce and brown sugar until the sugar is mostly dissolved. Pour this mixture directly over the meatballs and peppers in the slow cooker.
Look for The sauce should coat the meatballs evenly as it settles into the bottom of the slow cooker.
Tip Ensure the brown sugar is fully incorporated into the hot sauce to prevent burnt spots on the sides of the cooker.

Once the hot sauce and brown sugar mixture is added, the sauce will pool at the bottom of the cooker.

The ingredients are now submerged in the flavorful liquid, and the slow cooker is covered. Ensure the lid is properly seated to lock in the heat and moisture for the cooking process.

Cooking and glazing phase

  1. Slow cook and serve
Cover the slow cooker and cook on low heat for 3 hours, or until the meatballs reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C). Serve warm directly from the slow cooker.
Look for The sauce will become thick, glossy, and cling to the meatballs once cooking is complete.
Safe temperature 160°F (71°C) internal temperature (ground meat)
Tip Stir the meatballs once halfway through the cooking time to ensure they are evenly glazed by the sauce.

By the end of this phase, the meatballs are hot, tender, and coated in a thick, glossy red glaze. The peppers have softened and the sauce has reduced to the perfect consistency. The dish is now ready to be served immediately from the slow cooker.

Common mistakes

A common mistake is failing to stir the sauce ingredients together before adding them to the slow cooker; this can lead to clumps of brown sugar that do not dissolve properly. Another error is overcooking the meatballs, which can make them lose their texture.

Ensure you set a timer for the three-hour mark. Finally, avoid lifting the lid too frequently, as this releases heat and moisture, which are essential for the sauce to thicken correctly.

How to tell it’s done

The meatballs are perfectly done when they are heated through and the sauce has reduced to a thick, syrupy consistency that coats the back of a spoon. Using a digital thermometer, check that the meatballs have reached an internal temperature of at least 160°F (71°C).

The peppers should be tender and vibrant, and the entire dish should be steaming and fragrant, indicating that the flavors have successfully melded together.

  • Ground meat: 160°F (71°C) in the thickest part
