Tips for success
For the best texture, cut the chicken into uniform bite-sized cubes so they cook evenly. If you prefer chunkier pieces, that's fine, but adjust the cooking time accordingly—larger pieces may need a few extra minutes.
Use a good-quality marinara sauce; it's the backbone of the dish. You can also use crushed tomatoes with Italian seasoning if you prefer a chunkier sauce.
Don't skip the resting time after cooking. It allows the sauce to settle and thicken, making serving easier and the flavors more cohesive.
If you want a more browned, crispy cheese top, you can transfer the cooked dish to a broiler-safe pan and broil for 2-3 minutes—but that's optional. For leftovers, store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Variations
- Spicy Sausage Version: Replace half the chicken with cooked Italian sausage slices. Brown the sausage first, then layer as directed. Add a pinch of red pepper flakes with the herbs for heat.
- Vegetarian Mushroom Ziti: Swap the chicken for 2 cups of sliced cremini mushrooms and 1 cup of chopped zucchini. Sauté the mushrooms in olive oil before adding to the slow cooker to deepen flavor.
- Three-Cheese Blend: Use a mix of provolone, mozzarella, and parmesan for the top layer. The parmesan adds a salty, nutty note that complements the marinara.
- Gluten-Free Adaptation: Use gluten-free ziti or penne pasta. Check that the marinara sauce is gluten-free. The cooking time may be slightly shorter, so check pasta tenderness at 3 hours on LOW.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat gently, adding a splash of water or sauce if needed.
- Freezer
- Freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
- Reheat
- Reheat in the microwave in 1-minute intervals, stirring between, or on the stovetop over medium heat until hot. Add a little water or marinara to keep it moist.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat gently in the microwave or on the stovetop with a splash of water or marinara to loosen the sauce. The pasta will continue to absorb liquid, so add a little extra sauce if needed.
You can assemble the entire dish (without cooking) up to 24 hours ahead. Place the layered ingredients in the slow cooker insert, cover, and refrigerate. When ready to cook, let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes, then cook as directed—you may need to add 30 minutes to the cooking time since starting from cold.
Serving ideas
Serve this Crockpot Chicken Baked Ziti hot, straight from the slow cooker. It's a complete meal on its own, but it pairs beautifully with a crisp green salad dressed with lemon vinaigrette and a side of garlic bread for soaking up the sauce.
For a touch of freshness, sprinkle with chopped parsley or basil before serving—though the video didn't show it, it's a common garnish.
This dish is hearty enough to feed a crowd. Each serving is generous, and it's perfect for family dinners or potlucks. The leftovers are even better the next day, as the flavors continue to meld.
You can also serve it in bowls with extra parmesan on top, but keep in mind that the original recipe only uses the ingredients listed.

Crockpot Chicken Baked Ziti: Dump-and-Go Comfort

Ingredients
- 2 lb boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized cubes
- 16 oz ziti pasta
- 24 oz sweet basil marinara sauce
- 2 tsp dried Italian herb seasoning
- 1 cup whole-milk ricotta cheese
- 2 cups shredded provolone cheese
Instructions
- Place the cubed chicken breast pieces in the bottom of a 6-quart or larger slow cooker, spreading them into an even layer. Scatter the ziti pasta over the chicken, then pour the marinara sauce over the pasta. Sprinkle the dried Italian herb seasoning evenly over the sauce.
- Drop spoonfuls of ricotta over the top of the sauce, distributing them evenly. Then sprinkle the shredded provolone cheese over the entire surface, covering the ricotta and sauce completely.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 4 hours, or on HIGH for 2 to 3 hours. Do not stir during cooking. The dish is done when the chicken is cooked through and the pasta is tender.
- After the cooking time, check that the chicken has reached an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) using an instant-read thermometer inserted into a few cubes. The pasta should be tender but not mushy.
- Turn off the slow cooker and let the dish rest, uncovered, for 10 minutes. This allows the sauce to thicken slightly and the flavors to meld. Serve hot directly from the Crockpot, scooping up generous portions with a large spoon.
