Before you start

Before beginning, ensure your slow cooker insert is clean and dry. Gather all ingredients, including the canned apple filling, caramel sauce, yellow cake mix, and unsalted butter. Slice the butter into uniform pieces to ensure even melting across the top of the cake mix.

Prepare a clear workspace on your countertop to allow for easy assembly of the layers. Check that your slow cooker is plugged in and placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from any edges.

Ingredients at a glance (4)
  • 2 cans canned apple pie filling
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce
  • 1 packet yellow cake mix
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, sliced

Instructions

Layering

  1. Layering the ingredients
Pour the canned apple pie filling into the bottom of the slow cooker insert, spreading it evenly across the base. Drizzle the caramel sauce over the apple filling to ensure a rich, consistent flavor throughout the dessert. Use a spatula if needed to distribute the caramel evenly over the fruit layer.
Look for The apple filling should cover the bottom of the slow cooker completely.
Tip Ensure the slow cooker insert is clean before adding the filling.

The canned apple filling should be spread across the entire bottom of the insert in a level layer to provide a stable foundation.

Make sure the caramel sauce is drizzled evenly across all the fruit, checking that no large gaps are left unglazed before moving to the dry ingredients.

Topping

  1. Adding the topping
Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix directly over the top of the caramel-apple layer, ensuring no large clumps remain. Place the slices of butter evenly across the entire surface of the cake mix. This butter will melt during the cooking process to create a golden, crunchy crust on top of the cake.
Look for The cake mix should be evenly distributed and completely covered by the butter slices.
Tip Do not stir the ingredients; the dump cake method relies on the layers staying separate.

The yellow cake mix must form a uniform, dry blanket completely obscuring the apple base without any heavy mounds in the middle. The butter pats should cover the vast majority of the cake mix surface in an even grid to ensure every dry patch receives sufficient fat during melting.

Cooking

  1. Cooking the cake
Cover the slow cooker with the lid and cook on high for three hours. The cake is finished when the fruit is bubbling and the cake topping is set and golden brown. Allow the cake to rest for ten minutes after cooking to let the juices thicken before serving warm.
Look for The edges should look golden and the center should be set, with fruit bubbling around the sides.
Tip Keep the lid on for the duration of the cooking time to trap moisture.

The entire room should fill with a warm, sweet cinnamon and caramel aroma while the dessert cooks. Look for deep golden browning around the edges, active bubbling along the sides of the insert, and a topping that looks fully set with no visible dry powder remaining.

Common mistakes

Avoid stirring the ingredients after layering them in the slow cooker; the dump cake method depends on the cake mix staying on top to form the crust. Another common mistake is using butter that is too thick, which can lead to uneven patches of unbaked cake mix.

Finally, do not lift the lid during the last hour of cooking, as this releases essential heat and will prevent the top from becoming properly golden and crisp.

How to tell it’s done

The cake is done when the edges appear golden brown and the fruit filling is bubbling actively against the sides of the slow cooker insert. The cake topping should look set and no longer appear powdery or dry.

If the center still looks wet, continue cooking for an additional fifteen minutes. Allow the dessert to rest for ten minutes, which helps the juices thicken and makes serving much easier.

Coming up in Part 3: common questions

  • Can this be made in a smaller slow cooker?
