Before you start

Before beginning, ensure all ingredients are measured and ready. If you are preparing the cheese sauce from scratch, ensure it is completed and kept warm.

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it is ready when the assembly is finished. Have your cutting board, knives, and baking dish within reach for a smooth workflow.

Ingredients at a glance (7)
  • 1 lb bacon, sliced
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 12 pieces lasagna noodles, cooked
  • 2 cups velvety cheese sauce, store-bought or made ahead
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese, grated
  • fresh parsley, chopped, for serving

Instructions

Meat preparation

  1. Prepare the meat and bacon
Cook the bacon in a large skillet over medium heat until crispy. Remove the bacon and set aside on paper towels. In the same skillet, cook the ground beef until browned, then stir in the minced garlic and cook until fragrant, ensuring the beef reaches an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
Look for The beef should be browned and the garlic fragrant.
Safe temperature 160°F (71°C) internal temperature (ground meat)
Tip Save a small amount of bacon fat in the pan for extra flavor when browning the beef.

The ground beef should be fully browned and aromatic with garlic. The bacon should be rendered of its fat and turned into crispy, golden pieces. Ensure all excess fat is drained from the skillet before starting the assembly to keep the final dish from becoming overly greasy.

Layering the lasagna

  1. Assemble the lasagna
Spread a thin layer of the velvety cheese sauce on the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish. Add a layer of cooked lasagna noodles, followed by the garlic beef mixture, more cheese sauce, and a sprinkle of parmesan. Repeat these layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a generous layer of cheese sauce and parmesan.
Look for The layers should be evenly distributed and the dish filled to the top.
Tip Ensure the edges of the noodles are covered in sauce to prevent them from drying out during baking.

The layers should be uniform, starting with sauce and ending with a final layer of cheese. Check that the noodles are completely covered by the sauce to prevent drying.

The dish should look structured and ready for the oven, with all ingredients neatly stacked within the walls of the baking pan.

Baking and finishing

  1. Bake and garnish
Place the lasagna in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) and bake until the cheese is bubbling and golden brown. Remove from the oven, top with the reserved crispy bacon and fresh parsley. Allow the dish to rest for 10 minutes before slicing to ensure the layers hold their structure.
Look for The cheese should be bubbling and golden brown on top.
Tip Cover the dish with foil for the first 20 minutes if the cheese browns too quickly.

The lasagna should be golden and bubbling, indicating that the cheese has melted and the sauce is hot. After resting, the lasagna should be firm enough to slice cleanly. Garnish with the bacon and parsley just before serving to maintain the freshness and the crunch of the bacon topping.

Common mistakes

Avoid overcooking the noodles before assembly, as they will continue to cook in the oven. If they are too soft initially, they may turn mushy.

Additionally, do not skip the resting period after baking; this is crucial for the layers to set, allowing for clean, beautiful slices instead of a collapsed heap on the plate.

How to tell it’s done

The lasagna is done when the cheese is bubbling and golden brown on the surface. Because the meat was fully cooked before assembly, the oven time is primarily to meld the flavors and ensure the sauce is heated through.

The internal temperature of the center should reach at least 165°F (74°C) for food safety.

  • Ground meat: 160°F (71°C) in the thickest part
