Tips for success
For the crispiest gnocchi, use a well-seasoned cast-iron or stainless steel skillet and heat the oil until it shimmers before adding the gnocchi.
Avoid stirring too often; let them develop a golden crust. If the pan seems dry, add a tiny splash of olive oil.
To keep the sauce emulsified, add the cold butter in small pieces and whisk constantly. If the sauce starts to separate, remove the pan from the heat and whisk in a tablespoon of cold water.
This will help bring it back together. Always taste before adding salt—capers and broth can be salty.
Variations
- Add chicken or shrimp: For extra protein, add sliced cooked chicken breast or seared shrimp to the skillet when you add the gnocchi. If using raw shrimp, cook them first and set aside, then toss them back in at the end.
- Spicy kick: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes along with the garlic for a subtle heat that balances the lemon. Alternatively, stir in a teaspoon of Calabrian chili paste at the end for a more pronounced kick.
- Herb swap: Replace the parsley with fresh basil or chives for a different herbal note. Basil adds a sweet, aromatic touch, while chives offer a mild onion flavor that complements the lemon.
- Vegetable boost: Toss in a handful of baby spinach or asparagus tips during the last minute of cooking. The greens will wilt into the sauce, adding color and nutrients without changing the dish's character.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Freezer
- Freeze the cooked gnocchi in a single layer on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer bag for up to 2 months.
- Reheat
- Reheat leftovers in a skillet over medium-low heat with a splash of broth or water. Stir gently until the sauce is smooth and the gnocchi are hot.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in a skillet over low heat with a splash of broth or water to loosen the sauce. Avoid microwaving, as it can make the gnocchi gummy.
The sauce can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 2 days. Reheat it gently in a skillet, then add freshly seared gnocchi.
However, for the best texture, sear the gnocchi fresh—they lose their crispness when stored. You can also prep the capers and garlic ahead and store them in the fridge.
Serving ideas
Serve this gnocchi as a main dish with a simple green salad and crusty bread to soak up the extra sauce. It also works as a side dish alongside grilled chicken or fish, though it's hearty enough to stand alone.
For a touch of elegance, top with extra fried capers and a sprinkle of lemon zest. A glass of the same white wine used in the sauce makes a perfect pairing.
This dish is best enjoyed immediately, while the gnocchi are still crisp and the sauce is warm and glossy.

Lemon Caper Piccata Gnocchi: Bright 10-Minute Dinner

Ingredients
- 3 tbsp drained non-pareil capers
- 30 ml olive oil (about 2 tbsp)
- 4 cloves garlic, sliced
- 60 ml dry white wine (about 1/4 cup)
- 1 lemon
- 500 g gnocchi (about 1 lb)
- 60 g cold butter, cubed (about 4 tbsp)
- 45 ml fresh lemon juice (about 3 tbsp)
- 60 ml vegetable broth (about 1/4 cup)
- Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish, to taste
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the drained capers and sliced garlic. Cook, stirring frequently, until the capers pop and turn crispy and the garlic is fragrant and lightly golden, about 2 to 3 minutes.
- Pour the white wine into the skillet. Stir to scrape up any browned bits from the bottom. Let the wine bubble and reduce by half, about 1 minute.
- Zest the lemon directly into the skillet, then squeeze in the fresh lemon juice. Stir to combine. The sauce will look thin at this point; that's fine.
- Add the gnocchi to the skillet in a single layer. Cook without stirring too much until the bottoms are golden and crispy, about 3 to 4 minutes. Turn the gnocchi to brown another side if desired.
- Reduce the heat to medium-low. Add the cold butter cubes and the vegetable broth. Stir constantly until the butter melts and the sauce turns glossy and emulsified, about 2 minutes. The sauce should coat the back of a spoon.
- Remove the skillet from the heat. Sprinkle with the chopped parsley and toss gently to coat. Serve immediately, spooning extra sauce over the top.
