Before you start
Before beginning, ensure all ingredients are gathered and ready for assembly. Check that the air fryer basket is clean and free of any debris from previous uses.
Having the ham slices and shredded cheese portioned out beforehand will make the rolling process much smoother and faster. Keep the tortillas at room temperature to maintain their pliability, as cold tortillas are more prone to tearing when being rolled tightly.
Ingredients at a glance (3)
- 4 flour tortillas
- 8 slices chicken ham
- 1 cup shredded cheese
Instructions
Assembly phase
- Prepare the wrapsLay out the flour tortillas on a flat surface. Place two slices of chicken ham in the center of each tortilla, then sprinkle a generous portion of shredded cheese over the ham.Look for ensure the filling is centeredTip Do not overfill the tortillas to prevent leaking during the air frying process.
At the end of this phase, the wraps should be neatly rolled with the ham and cheese securely tucked inside. Ensure the edges are folded firmly so that the filling stays contained during the cooking process. The rolls should look uniform, which helps them cook at the same rate once they are placed into the air fryer.
Rolling phase
- Roll and sealFold the sides of each tortilla inward, then roll them tightly to create a neat cylinder shape. Ensure the seam side is facing down to keep the wrap together during cooking.Look for tight and secure rollsTip A tight roll ensures that the cheese stays inside while melting.
The wraps are now tightly sealed cylinders ready for the heat. Check that each roll is uniform in size and that the seam is firmly pressed against the bottom of the roll.
A well-constructed cylinder at this stage will ensure that the final product maintains its shape and does not leak cheese into the bottom of the air fryer.
Cooking phase
- Air fry until goldenPlace the wraps in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Cook at 380°F (193°C) for 8 minutes until the exterior is golden brown and blistered.Look for golden brown and crispy exteriorTip Check the wraps halfway through to ensure even browning on all sides.
The wraps are now perfectly golden, crispy, and hot. The cheese should be bubbling and visible at the ends, and the exterior should have a deep, toasted color. Allow the wraps to rest for a minute or two before cutting, as this helps the cheese set slightly and makes them easier to handle and eat without spilling.
Common mistakes
A common mistake is overcrowding the air fryer basket, which prevents the hot air from reaching the sides of the wraps and results in uneven cooking or soggy spots.
Another error is failing to place the seam side down initially, which can cause the wrap to unroll during cooking. Always take the time to ensure the seal is secure before placing them into the hot basket.
How to tell it’s done
The wraps are done when the exterior has turned a rich, golden brown with visible blistered spots on the surface. The cheese inside should be completely melted and slightly oozing from the ends of the wrap.
Use kitchen tongs to gently press the wrap; it should feel firm and crisp to the touch, indicating that the tortilla has successfully toasted through to the center.
