Tips for success
For the crispiest result, spray the onion with oil just before placing it in the air fryer, and again halfway through cooking. This helps the flour coating brown evenly.
If the air fryer has a basket, shake it gently once or twice to ensure even cooking, but be careful not to break the onion apart.
The comeback sauce can be customized with extra horseradish or hot sauce for more heat. If you prefer a milder sauce, reduce the cayenne in the flour or omit it.
Serve the blooming onion as an appetizer with extra napkins—it's meant to be pulled apart with fingers.
Variations
- Spicy Sriracha Dip: Replace the hot sauce with 1 tbsp sriracha and add 1 tsp honey to the comeback sauce for a sweet-spicy twist. Serve with extra sriracha on the side for those who like it hotter.
- Garlic Parmesan: After air frying, sprinkle the hot onion with 2 tbsp grated Parmesan and 1 tsp garlic powder. Omit the cayenne for a milder version. The cheese melts slightly, adding a savory note.
- Smoky BBQ: Add 1 tsp smoked paprika and 1/2 tsp chipotle powder to the flour mixture. Serve with a smoky BBQ sauce instead of the comeback sauce for a Southern twist.
- Herb and Lemon: Add 1 tbsp dried oregano and 1 tsp lemon zest to the flour mixture. Serve with a lemon-herb mayo by mixing 1/2 cup mayo, 1 tbsp lemon juice, and 1 tsp dried dill.

Air Fryer Blooming Onion with Comeback Sauce

Ingredients
- 1 large Vidalia or other sweet onion
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp paprika
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- cooking spray, for spraying, to taste
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp prepared horseradish
- 1 tsp hot sauce
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
Instructions
- Peel the onion and trim the top. Place it root-side down. Make vertical cuts from the top down to about 1/2 inch from the root, creating 16 even petals. Be careful not to cut all the way through. In a small bowl, whisk the buttermilk and egg until combined. In a shallow dish, mix the flour, paprika, cayenne, salt, and black pepper. Brush the egg wash between every petal, then sprinkle the flour mixture generously between the petals, making sure to coat all surfaces.
- In a small bowl, stir together the mayonnaise, ketchup, prepared horseradish, hot sauce, garlic powder, and smoked paprika until smooth. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
- Preheat the air fryer to 380°F (193°C) for 3 minutes. Place the coated onion in the air fryer basket, root-side down. Spray the onion generously with cooking spray, making sure to get between the petals. Air fry for 15 minutes, or until the petals are golden brown and crispy. If the top petals brown too quickly, loosely cover with a small piece of foil for the last few minutes.
- Carefully remove the blooming onion from the air fryer and place it on a serving plate. Serve hot with the comeback sauce on the side for dipping. Pull the petals apart with your fingers or a fork, and enjoy the crunchy, flavorful bites.
