Tips for success
For the crispiest results, do not overcrowd the air fryer basket. Cook in batches if necessary, keeping the cooked fries warm on a wire rack in a low oven.
The wire rack allows air to circulate around the fries, preventing the bottoms from steaming and becoming soggy. If you have leftovers, reheat them in the air fryer at 375°F (190°C) for 2 to 3 minutes to restore crispness.
The lime crema can be made a day ahead and stored in the refrigerator. For a smoother texture, blend the cilantro and jalapeño into the crema using a small food processor. If you prefer a spicier kick, leave some of the jalapeño seeds in. The crema also works well as a dip for other vegetables, tacos, or grilled meats, so consider making a double batch.
Variations
- Spicy Chipotle Crema: Add 1 teaspoon of chipotle hot sauce or 1/2 teaspoon of chipotle powder to the crema for a smoky, spicy kick. Adjust the amount to taste, and garnish with a few extra cilantro leaves.
- Herb-Crusted Fries: Mix 2 tablespoons of finely chopped fresh parsley or chives into the panko mixture. This adds a fresh herbal note that complements the avocado and lime.
- Coconut-Crusted Fries: Replace half of the panko with unsweetened shredded coconut for a tropical twist. Toast the coconut lightly before mixing to enhance its flavor. Serve with a mango-lime dipping sauce.
- Everything Bagel Seasoning: Swap the Tajín for 1 tablespoon of everything bagel seasoning. The sesame, garlic, and onion flavors pair beautifully with the creamy avocado and lime crema.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store leftover avocado fries in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. The lime crema can be refrigerated separately for up to 4 days.
- Freezer
- Not recommended; freezing will make the avocado mushy and the crust soggy upon thawing.
- Reheat
- Reheat leftover fries in an air fryer at 375°F (190°C) for 2 to 3 minutes until hot and crisp. Avoid microwaving.
Avocado fries are best enjoyed immediately, as the crust will soften over time. If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. To reheat, place them in the air fryer at 375°F (190°C) for 2 to 3 minutes, or until heated through and crisp again. Avoid microwaving, as it will make the crust soggy.
The lime crema can be prepared up to 2 days in advance and stored in the refrigerator. The breading station can be set up ahead of time, but the avocado wedges should be coated just before air-frying to prevent them from becoming soggy.
The coated wedges can be refrigerated for up to 1 hour before cooking, but longer may cause the avocado to oxidize and the crust to soften.
Serving ideas
Serve the avocado fries immediately after cooking, while the crust is at its crispiest. Arrange them on a platter with the lime crema in a small bowl for dipping.
A sprinkle of extra Tajín or a few cilantro leaves on top adds a fresh finish. These fries are perfect as an appetizer for a party, a side dish for burgers or tacos, or a satisfying snack on their own.
The lime crema is an essential part of the experience, providing a cool, tangy contrast to the warm, crispy fries. For a more substantial meal, serve the fries as a topping for salads or grain bowls.
They also pair well with grilled fish or chicken. If you have any crema left, use it as a sauce for tacos, a dressing for slaw, or a dip for raw vegetables.

Crispy Air-Fryer Avocado Fries with Lime Crema

Ingredients
- 2 firm Hass avocados
- 2 tbsp fresh lime juice
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 100 g panko breadcrumbs
- 30 g finely grated parmesan
- 2 tsp Tajín chili-lime seasoning
- 1/2 cup Mexican crema or sour cream
- 1/4 cup fresh cilantro leaves, finely chopped
- 1 jalapeño, seeded and minced
- 1 tsp lime zest
- kosher salt to taste
Instructions
- Cut each avocado in half lengthwise, remove the pit, and peel. Slice each half into 4 to 5 wedges, about 1/2 inch thick. Place the wedges in a bowl and toss gently with the lime juice to coat, which helps prevent browning and adds brightness. In a separate small bowl, stir together the crema, cilantro, jalapeño, lime zest, and a pinch of salt. Cover and refrigerate the crema while preparing the avocado.
- Place the flour in a shallow dish. Beat the eggs in a second shallow dish. In a third dish, combine the panko, parmesan, and Tajín seasoning, mixing well to distribute the spices. Arrange the three dishes in a line: flour, egg, panko mixture. This assembly line makes coating efficient and keeps hands relatively clean.
- Working with a few wedges at a time, dredge each wedge in the flour, shaking off any excess. Dip it into the beaten egg, letting the excess drip off, then press it into the panko mixture, turning to coat all sides. Place the coated wedges on a plate or baking sheet in a single layer. Repeat with the remaining wedges.
- Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 3 to 5 minutes. While it heats, lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray or brush with a little oil to help the crust crisp and prevent sticking. This step ensures the fries start cooking immediately at the right temperature.
- Place the coated avocado wedges in the air fryer basket in a single layer, leaving space between each wedge for air circulation. Cook at 400°F (200°C) for 7 minutes, turning the wedges once halfway through, until the crust is deep golden brown and crispy. The avocado inside should be warm and creamy but not mushy.
- After 7 minutes, remove one fry and cut it in half to check the interior. The avocado should be fully warmed through and creamy, with no raw or cold center. The crust should be deeply golden and shatter when bitten. If the fries need more color, air-fry for an additional 1 to 2 minutes, watching closely to prevent burning.
- Transfer the hot avocado fries to a serving plate or wire rack. Sprinkle lightly with a pinch of kosher salt while they are still warm. Let them rest for 1 to 2 minutes — this allows the crust to set and prevents the avocado from sliding out when bitten.
- Arrange the avocado fries on a platter with the lime crema on the side for dipping. Serve immediately while the crust is at its crispiest. The contrast between the crunchy coating and the creamy avocado is best enjoyed right away.
